Just saw this Roy App from Koi’s X account post.

I downloaded and registered.

Koi has $1.2K donated to him thus far!

I guess it’s NIL app to give players money directly! Almost like GoFundMe or OnlyFans for athletes! 😆

If they transfer, then we get our money back.

Interesting.

Maybe this if fine but my spidey "this is a bad idea" sense is tingling.

Less so the concept and more so the middle man apps and "we hold your money" finance companies have a long history of going belly up / bad ideas.

I kind of wondered about this aspect as well. For example it says the money is returned if they transfer, does that mean Koi doesn't get paid until he graduates?

Very interesting concept though and the ability to support a player directly is something that I am sure will appeal to a lot of people. I guess this is technically NIL because the player is profiting off their name.

Seems a bit odd to just give people money for nothing in return. These guys could make decent money if they were able to sell game-worn, autographed items and/or other items. Seems like a reasonable way for the U to spend some of their NIL money on additional equipment - tell the athletes that they can keep and sell all their gear that they have as a form of NIL. Then you just buy a game worn, autographed jersey directly from Perich (or whomever). I'd totally do that.

The University of Washington has a very direct system of working with the athletes:

The U has something like this, but if you click on a player you have to go through the U and get reviewed for compliance, and I don't know what goes into that. Has anybody gone through this deal that the U has, and if so, what is available?

Side note, on the Washington website, it specifically says this, which is the exact opposite of what this App is facilitating:

I'm not against this in principle by any means but as a grown man it would feel weird donating money to a teenager to play football for my favorite team.
Welcome to the world of gambling and wanting to think we have some control.

Green Bay Parkers were way ahead of their time with people thinking they are owners.

Remember when filling out a bracket or playing fantasy football was cool?

Now every possession of a game has a gambling component to it.

Directly has a weird vibe.

You give money to someone / thing almost like you're buying something. People get expectations.

They might get the WRONG expectations ...

...especially when I sacrificed a lot to put two kids through college on my own dime.

There's also this weird Sword of Damocles hanging over the player in this instance isn't there?

Hey look here's some money. ... ope don't leave or nothing ...

That doesn't seem like a positive interaction.

I still strongly believe it should be a corporate sponsorship that retains players, we have how many fortune 500 companies and Carlson connections, get every player on a billboard or commercial or packaging

Taylor and Perich both announce they will be back and promote NIL and the Roy App. They told me I'm the "heart and soul of the team" and if I give them $$$ I will feel even closer. :ROFLMAO:

I mean if some crazy rich guy wants to give Koi Perich or some other player a bunch of money, cool I guess, but I don't think I'd do that even if I was rich.

It's always easy to spend other people's money, ain't it.

I still can’t get over with all the places you could direct your extra money you have to give it an already compensated player. But to each their own.

There's an Affinity Credit Union Billboard on S-280 a couple of hundred yards north of the Territorial/University exit that periodically features players from the men's and women's Gopher hockey teams. I don't see many billboards featuring the professional athletes for the respective franchises so one would think featuring Gopher players would be a possibility.

The pessimist in me shouts it looks like a Ponzi scheme. Where the owners spend a lot of money on themselves, hoping they’ll bring in enough new money to cover the current payments to players.

I think what you mean by this is you and I should start a competitor. Pronto...

How about a pledge program based on results? I donate $XX to Dinkytown Athletics if the Gophers win 10 games, maybe $XX for each trophy won, then $XXX for Big10 title and $xxxx for National Championship. Deliver results, get paid. Go to the Rate Bowl, here is a set of steak knives.

They will only pony up if it benefits them. How does college sports do that? Might be different if the founder of one of these fortune 500 companies was an alum.

The CEO of the largest publicly traded company in Minnesota was just murdered on the streets of New York, probably because his company has an abysmal record of paying insurance claims for sick people.

Let's try to clean that house up first.

We need a Phil Knight, Oregon class of 2025 has three 5 star and eleven 4 star recruits. Billionaire CEOs in Minnesota don’t care about football I guess.
