I was at the game and didn't see the hit on the QB? Was it a legit penalty? didn't show a replay either which makes me think it was a bad call. The officials didn't call a very good game today from what I saw. Any input?

If someone could post the replay that would be awesome.

And also explain what warranted the penalty on the bench?

RE: the penalty - unfortunately, in today's game, anytime a defender gets anywhere close to the QB's head, he's at risk of a penalty. As I saw the play, BBC was blitzing from the QB's left side, leaped up in the air with his arms extended to try and bat down the ball, and made contact with the QB on the way down. I could not tell for sure whether his arm hit the QB's helmet or not, but (apparently) that is what the ref saw.

Again, the way the game is being officiated now, if the rusher is not 100% positive that he can get the sack, he needs to hold up or risk drawing the flag.

I didn't see the "hit" on the QB but did see Coach when the flag flew.

From visitors side it looked like he threw down his clipboard onto the field while talking to one of the officials. On the postgame KFAN show they said he threw his headset.

I'd say he threw both. Honestly thought we might have a health issue recurrence.

I'll told Mrs. Billd to look out. Sure enough the next penalty came too.

Go Gophers!

From everything I'm hearing it was a bad call. For the bench penalty it apparently was due to kill spiking his clipboard and going ballistic on the refs

Here's the roughing the passer play. I guess the nicest way of putting it IMO is that it was a pretty weak call.

Hard to tell for sure, but it does look like we got jobbed there. I don't even see any contact to the head there. Just a guy that jumped to try and swat the pass and came down on him.

TV didn't show what Kill did, only showed him after he was called for a penalty.

By rule, it probably was the right call but the rule is so stupid. This is the one I hate the most. A guy is trying to knock the ball down, what is he supposed to do? Stop in mid-air? If it's obvious he is trying to knock the ball down, and the hit is not severe, then it should be a no call. Imagine if BBC actually knocked it down and they called that.

Let the guys play football for crying out loud.

In real time what I saw was BBC on a corner blitz realizing he could not get to the QB. He leaped in the air with his arms up in an attempt to block or tip the pass. He came to the ground contacting the QB with his hands still in the air and hit him with his chest. This was an awful call. Kill's reaction tells you all you need to know about the call. He was on the field and may have come in contact with an official. Thus, the bench penalty.

Seriously, I understand protecting the QB low and against big hits up high. But these BS late hit penalties are just stupid where the guy runs into the QB and gets flagged for it.

I also miss being able to light up a WR running across the middle of the field. Now we have little ****s like Wes Welker making a living because of the watered down rules. Defenseless receiver my ass, his defense is not running that route unless he wants to feel it.

Anything to the head is a violation. Anything. This rule is going to discourage raised arms. And it looked like we got a break very late when one of our pass rushers reached out and briefly contacted the qb's mask.

Yeah, at least allow the refs to use their brains and make a judgement call. A player trying to block a pass that comes down on a QB should not be an automatic penalty. It's common sense. The point of the call is to protect against injury which essentially means a concussion, and clearly what BBC did was not even close to causing the QB a head injury.

The defender was lunging at the QB way before he threw the ball. It was a terrible call.

I just watched it on the DVR, and although there were no great camera angles, I thought he hit him in the head.

They discussed the poor officiating on the post game show on radio. They said the roughing passer call was questionable at best. The bench penalty was for Kill throwing his head set, per Justin Gard.

these interference calls on under thrown balls are also maddening

Agree with all of this. BBC was already in the air when the ball was thrown. (Not sure how he didn't hit the ball.) The QB didn't move to avoid him at all, and BBC essentially put his hands out to break his own fall and, probably, to hit the QB ever so slightly. It's not clear where his hands landed - perhaps on Simian's helmet; however, the blow was quite soft at any rate.

Now, one can argue that BBC could have/should have not swiped his arms on the attempted block & landing; however, as GII stated, what's he supposed to do, stop in mid-air? Cheap call and one Gopher fans unfortunately just expect anymore in Big Ten/B10/B1G play. Refs just don't respect Minnesota football. Maybe if we wore Red instead of Maroon, or had Bo Ryan on the sidelines...

Anyone know what warranted the bench warning on the kick return? Im guessing maybe excessive celebration, nothing seemed excessive though, and I think the refs need to take into consideration how big of a play that was too. the warning made me feel a bit like the team was getting picked on.

Total horsesh!t call. I understand protecting the qb, but that was not a malicious or intentional hit on the qb. Furthermore, those kind of calls can lead a ref to determine the game and not the players and coaches. Once refs start affecting the outcome of the game due to highly questionable calls, the integrity of the game becomes an issue and that can lead people to stop watching the games.

I think the general feeling was that the game was over-officiated. Just look at the two ineligible man downfield penalties, that call is rarely made twice in one game.

The call was roughing the passer, not hands to the face or head. That was not roughing the passer. Contact was made less than a second after the throw was made and BC was still in the air from a leaping attempt to block the pass.

The score book recorded a personal foul. Both "roughing the passer" and "striking fouls and tripping" are personal fouls under Rule 9, Section 1. Despite what the ref said on the field, the question is whether there was a personal foul on the play.

ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or
neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow
or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-
4-I-VI)

A "defenseless opponent" includes a passer in the act of or just after throwing a pass per the rules.

Was there forcible contact to the head of a defenseless opponent on the play? Appears so. Fair call.

On the unsportsmanlike act by Kill and staff...

b. Other prohibited acts include:
1. During the game, coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in the
team area shall not be on the field of play or outside the 25-yard lines
without permission from the referee unless legally entering or leaving
the field (Exceptions: Rules 1-2-4-f and 3-3-8-c).

He went on the field without permission. Absolutely fair to call a penalty there.

The 10 guys guys on the field timeout, the penalties, the 97 yards.. brutal drive.

Myrick "fixed it" though. Nice win.

Hey, any time you can take a shot at Kill why not do it right? Thanks for sharing.

I don't think too many people are questioning the second penalty.

Don't forget about the blatant missed holding penalty in the end zone that would have resulted in a safety three plays into the drive.

Simple fact is the gophers are still not respected so they are not going to get many borderline calls to go their way. However, if they keep winning the refs will start respecting them and give them a call or two. Until then they will have to battle both the opponent and the refs.
