When Mitch Leidner walked into the end zone to give the Gophers a 21-3 lead late in the first quarter, it looked like Saturday’s Homecoming game against Rutgers would be a much-needed blowout victory.
Almost three hours later, however, the Gophers used a 28-yard field goal from Emmit Carpenter’s right foot to escape TCF Bank Stadium with a 34-32 win over the Scarlet Knights.
“I guess there for a little bit, we thought they’d just get on the bus and go home,” said Gophers coach Tracy Claeys. “So that was disappointing.”
