I've studied the DVR replay of the past two games now...Games in which Rodney Williams has shot lights out(for him), knocking down threes in successive games to bring his season average up near the 20% barrier.

I noticed one similarity on all his misses this season...He's always long, either off the backboard or back of the rim. On his most recent 3 pointers he's made, he wasn't standing right at the line. In both cases, he was at least 4 feet beyond the arc, resulting in that tasty, off the window tray he hit against the Illini and a swish at Iowa from 25 feet.

I think I've discovered Rodney's range...Its from 24 to 25 feet but nothing shorter or longer, unless its an uncontested dunk.

Let's hope Tubby will greenlight Rodney from now on.

Haha that's a kind of ridiculous analysis, that bank shot had plenty of luck. I think it's two things. One: teams are not playing close to him anymore since he can't hit shots from the perimeter and he's too quick off the dribble to be guarding that close. Two: he's having extra room to shoot and this is building his confidence. If you look at his motion he has all the mechanics. Confidence and repetition are all he needs now.

People keep saying he has good form but I don't see it. It's mechanical, herky jerky, and it seems like he almost releases the ball on his way down sometimes.

He has no arc on the ball. I agree with Moses, if Rodney is shooting the ball and I am a rebounder I am going weakside for the board as the shot will be long, never short.

On Rodney's three legitimate makes (don't count the bank shot against Ill) his form and arc were great...on the 30 missed, he was long, flat or just wide right or left by two feet.

Can't remember who, but the guy who used to coach Eric Gordon and Indiana had a point about Rodney over jumping during game situations and messing up his form. Kind of like in golf when your hands get out of rythm and you over comp and end up slicing or duck hooking.

Rodney needs to shoot a thousand jump shots a day and practice the rythm of a shot...over and over and over...my question has always been...is he being coached and does he do the work? Time will tell on both...but Rodney, Chip, Austin, Trevor, Mav and Ralph should all be shooting all summer long...I would rather they shoot than play Pulley...but we know that's not going to happen.

Ah so that's why he's such a major pro prospect. He's a lights out shooter from NBA range!

The phrase.

"Chuck it from the cheap seats". ( Shooter Fly) doesn't apply to Rodney. No shot 15 ft out Rodney until you get proper mechanics.

His form is fine

I think that Dan Dakich was correct in asserting that Rodney lifts too high on his shot, which can cause them to go long. I also think he has shot an inordinate # of corner pocket 3 pointers; the toughest shot on the court. Finally, who knows about Rodney's eye sight. Perhaps he is far-sighted or something silly like that.

I would much rather see Rodney start from triple threat, take diagonal dribble left or right toward the basket (his defender will sag) and then lift gently and shoot the 16-18 footer. He is SO capable of making that play, or at least attempting it; but never does. Astounding really.

He clearly over jumps during games, I can't recall a single jump shot Rodney's missed that hasn't gone long. I don't think there's a thing wrong with his form or his eyes, it's all about the lift he gets. If he can learn to be consistent on his take off, you'll see his shooting take off likewise. The same thing that puts us in awe when he's taking off for a dunk, is a bit of a curse for him with his jump shot, he needs to learn to control it.

Jumping TOO high on a jump shot? That's a new one on me...

This offseason Rodney needs to put up one thousand shots a day from 10-15 feet while concentrating on rhythm and form. The long range will come easy after that.

If you practice with a certain lift on your shot, and then you go into a game and you jump higher, your shot is gonna be off and go long repeatedly. If he practices with that same lift, then that's another story, but based on how he looks when he shoots, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess he doesn't.

Yeah I understand that. Just being a smartass. Rodney needs to practice with the same intensity that he plays with in a game I guess.

We have reached consensus

Someone phone the training staff to tell them we've a likely solution to Rodney's shooting problems. Now, what's the next issue we need to address?

How about Ralph's propensity to fiddle with the ball too long in the post only to have the ball stolen or tied up?

But there is another problem with RW. 11/26 from the line in B10 play. No jumping involved.

"Sports Science" should do a segment on how much force and torque Rodney uses to blast one of his 6 footer layups off the glass, all the way into the hands of the opposing head coach on the fly.

Looks to me like his problems from three and his problems from the line are different. From three, I honestly think it's his elevation that's the problem. From the line, Rodney has the yips, it looks like to me.

Issue is the same

His issue at the line and from the three point line are the same; CONFIDENCE.

I've seen cocky 5 foot nothing guards in high school shoot the lights out everywhere because they have an ego and believe they are Air Jordan. Rodney needs to be build up and just believe in himself. He needs one game where he is hot and drops 20+. He needs to shoot early and often. We never score in the first three minutes anyway, so why not try and get him on track. We can lob the ball into Mbakwe much easier later in the game.

Rodney needs to actually develop a PULL UP jumper. He is clearly one of the best leapers in the nation and should use that to his advantage. The ease at which he could just pull up and rise over everyone astounds me. Has anyone ever told him/taught him this? On a team that lacks a true playmaker, Rodney could be that guy if he'd ever establish a pull up game IMO.
