I think we need a 'All Things Former Gophers Currently Playing' thread.
___

Rodney Williams made his first NBA preseason appearance on Monday night for the Philadelphia 76ers. The former Golden Gopher played 19 minutes and did not score, but recorded a block, steal, assist and a defensive rebound in what was a good first step for the undrafted rookie.

But the best stat of the night for Williams was that he had zero turnovers. Compare that to another Golden Gopher on the 76ers roster, and you know who’s the best behaving Gopher on that roster.

Royce White played again for the 76ers — his fourth preseason appearance this season. In 17 minutes, he notched seven points, six rebounds and five turnovers. He fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, drawing a technical on his last foul, and giving their opponent, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the free throws to take the lead for good.

The former Hopkins High School prodigy is averaging more than four fouls a game this preseason and has also been sloppy with the ball, turning it over 3.5 times per game.

At one point, Trevor Mbakwe was also on the 76ers roster along with Williams and White, but he signed a contract to play in Europe this year for Virtus Roma of the Italian League

5 TOs and 6 fouls in 17 minutes? That's efficient!

Royce has had a rough go of it so far.

Good job by Rodney though, seemed like he just had an overall solid night. Seems to be lookinh to earn his time by playing hard and doing the little things. Even though the sixers are in extreme tank mode, I hope Rod gets a good shot and spends the year with the team!

Royce is a d-bag who, if anybody outside of MN or Iowa State b-ball fans knew who he was, would single-handedly set the perception of anxiety disorders back to the days of leeches and bloodletting.

So..uhh....Rodney had 2 pts, 2 reb, 2 blks in 13 minutes last night vs. TWolves.

You were expecting 20pts? Did you watch him play as a gopher? This is the NBA. I did enjoy his stuff of JJ.

Was just trying to get the All-Things Rodney thread back to All-Things Rodney.

Yep, had a great block (which led to a White fast break dunk), and a nice dunk near the end. He was active, so that's good. Hope he can latch on.

The only way he makes a team is to "fill up the stat sheet." Not in the triple-double sort of way - I don't think we can expect that. I'm saying he needs to do a little bit of everything. These stats, while modest, may indicate that.

Royce was waived today along with Vander Blue And Khalif Wyat. As far as I can tell, Rodney is still alive.

Does anyone know the roster size right now?

According to this article the roster is down to 16 and the final spot will go to either Rodney or Hollis Thompson

New 76ers coach Brett Brown said pregame that Rodney Williams clearly has NBA body, athleticism, just wants an understanding of game there

Still possible Kwame Brown gets his $3 million buyout and Sixers get roster spot. Rodney Williams, Hollis Thompson, Daniel Orton still here

"A lot of talk... 'Cut Royce', 'Trade Royce', only a few players with my skill set in the WHOLE league... everybody knows it. #RedNation" -- Royce White, 6/30/13 on Twitter

Man, I hope Rodney makes it. I'd love to see him succeed in the Association. I hope Trevor eventually gets a cup of coffee too. But I think Rodney has so much excitement to add, plus so much potential as a defensive stopper and high-flyer, that I don't want to see his highlights via choppy video from China.

Rodney has a huge upside because of his athleticism. If he can work with a personal trainer to develop a consistent mid-range shot then he'll have a certain spot on an NBA roster. At present he's a raw version of Corey Brewer.

I'd bet Trevor has a nice euro career, but no NBA action. Hope I'm wrong.

Interested to see if Colt is with the Celtics next year.

“If I continue getting better and have a successful season, I think the probability of me being in Boston hopefully is pretty good, but you never know what the future will hold so I’ll just keep getting better every day.”

The Celtics are keeping tabs on Iverson from afar.

“We’re excited about Colton,” said Austin Ainge, the team’s director of player personnel. “We think he can be an NBA roster player. We all need big guys on the bench that can guard Dwight Howard and Nikola Pekovic and Andrew Bynum, the big, big strong dudes.’’

Among the areas that the Celtics want Iverson to work on: free throw shooting, footwork, post moves, guarding without fouling, his midrange jumper, running the pick-and-roll.

“He’s a good kid,” Ainge said. “Really for him, it’s just polish. He’s a big, raw physical kid.”

The bruising Iverson had 27 points in an August win against a French team and received “top rebounder” honors in a September tournament. But he said the officiating in European basketball has been one of his biggest adjustments.

“You have to change your game, change your style of play,” he said. “You can’t really play the way you play in America, physically, offensively and defensively.”

But, Iverson said, he’s adjusted to how games are officiated and that he’s spending a lot of time working on the defensive end.

“I think my role in the NBA will definitely be an X-factor-type player, just defensively, getting stops, making hustle plays, rebounding, and being able to hold my man to low amounts of points,” he said. “I think if I can continue to get better on defense, that would be huge for me.”

Iverson said he’s also had contact with rookie Celtics coach Brad Stevens, whom Iverson said he has admired since Stevens coached at Butler University.

“When I heard he was going to be the head coach of the Celtics, I was about as excited as anyone,” Iverson said.

The two actually faced off in college during the 2009-10 season, when Iverson was at Minnesota. The Gophers were ranked No. 16 and Butler No. 10, and Iverson’s team pulled off the 82-73 upset, as he recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds.
