Can anyone tell me what he brings to this team? Terrible shooter and very poor defender. Other than maybe 1-2 super athletic dunks per game, he does next to nothing.

I would argue the very poor defender. I would say he is an above average defender. Other than that, he is not bringing a lot to this game right now

wow strait shooter, rodney is an excellent defender. He brings long arms and extreme athleticism. We just have to give him time to develop his offensive game.

He just played poorly tonight. Check his box score from Western Kentucky. He was having an off game, as did Ralph.

Tubby showed a lot of faith putting Hollins in for him early, then having Chip finish the game.

Great game Chip.

Tubby had Chip in for the end. That seemed to have worked out well.

Nolen might just have gone ahead of Rodney on the NBA draft projections.

Rodney was off tonight...as were others. He just needs to breathe out there and develop his outside jumper.

What does he bring to the team? Other than wicked athleticism? He brings that dirty word( potential). He's still learning how to fundamentally play. So some nights you're gonna want to run him under with a bus, but if he listens and actually works hard on his game he should be good. It's fine to want instant results, but that doesn't happen all the time. That's why if a guy comes into the program with four-stars if he doesn't develop when he leaves he might not even be worth two. Give him time. He'll get it.

By the end of the season you'll be glad he's around.

He floats too much. When he isn't a big part of the offensive flow, he seems to just float around, not really doing anything out there. When he is on, it translates to the defensive end as well. All or nothing with Williams I'm afraid.

I agree - I get the jumping and dunking, and I also get that he had a bad night, but really he has shown very little of being the complete player we keep hearing about. Playing WV and NC would be places where he should step up the game and finish on the floor - not the bench. Don't get me wrong, I am excited to see if he is the real deal.

He's taken the first step and attacks off of the dribble occasionally now... he's just got to keep working on that and add an improved jumper and he'll be a hell of a player. I expect him to improve throughout the year and be great next year.

This crap of over-reacting to any one game by a player is already getting old. These guys are playing hard and are all contributing. Some nights match-ups or fouls or a poor shooting night or Tubby's substitutions, etc. might make someone look like he's not bringing much to the team. But only a total dumbass wouldn't see that each of the main rotation guys is vital to the team's success. The great thing so far is how different guys have stepped up this year in different situations so maybe just enjoy it instead of bitching.

Ummmm....

He IS just 5 games into his Sophomore year, right?

I better check my program to confirm that.

Good grief, settle down. The team has a lot of new faces, still trying to figure out how to work well together.

Hopefully he comes back next year and doesn't listen to all the agents and the "experts" who think he could be a lottery player this year.

It is great that we are developing some depth with the young guys. For a player that is being mentioned as a possible lottery pick, it would be hard to even play him in a game that we are down by 5-6 points late in the game. He has a long way to go before he could even be considered a top 5 player on this team. Crazy athleticism will only get you so far, just like "potenial".

Rodney did not play well tonight, but that doesn't mean he won't contribute as the season progresses. Rodney has so much athletic ability, but he has not picked up all of the necessary bb skills that he will need to reach his potential. Little things like moving his feet on defense, boxing out on rebounds, going straight up on jump shots and making good decisions with the basketball. I do thinnk Rodney has shown improvement from last year and he will have some big games this season. It should also be noted that Ralph played very poorly tonight. When you consider two of the five starters played poorly and the Gophers beat a good team in WV, tonight was a nice win.

I think anyone with this line of thinking is being overly critical after a poor game. That being said, Rodney had a VERY, VERY poor game tonight. He took three ill advised shots in a row early in the first half, and refused to simply grab the ball and go up strong again on the offensive glass. He's got to realized that he hasn't developed a three point shot yet, and MUST be more confident in simply driving to the basket. He does too much hanging out on the perimeter refusing to engage the defender and just drive and dish, or drive and use his athleticism to go up strong.

Not this again

A player has an off night and its "what does he bring to the team?". We've heard this before...

Wow.

It hasn't "clicked" for Rodney offensively yet...but he is just starting his sophomore year. If it does end up clicking for him, he can be a monster. And the best way for him to develop is game time...

Rodney has put the ball on the floor and taken it to the basket more this year than all of last year, I've been happy with that so far. The shots just have to start falling. I think his defense has been pretty good but he needs to box out better and rebound better. Overall he is just an average player at this time and needs to play more consistent to earn his minutes.

What Mulligan said is right on...give the full-season assessments after one single game a rest. Ralph was terrible tonight but he's been great this season. We won...enough said. Others had his back tonight including Armelin and that's how good teams operate.

Two years ago some ill-advised posters questioned whether Hoffarber was a divison one talent. Last year people had the same question about Iverson. Look at what they have done since and where they are now. Iverson was arguably the MVP tonight and Hoffarber has been the "glue" guy and has played awesome this season and last.

Word of advice. In order to avoid looking like an idiot, avoid throwing your own players under the bus.

remember this isn't a team with a STAR, it's a TEAM of good players and when one or two are off, someone else picks up, makes them very hard to defend, no one to double on. The frosh are getting meaningful minutes and playing better than expected and will contribute during B10 pla.

He has got 2 more years to become a stud, and I imagine we will see flashes of it in the meantime. Tubby knows how to coach up talent. The guy will figure it out eventually. He had an off night. He was in foul trouble and West Virginia is a bad matchup for his skillset.

I really hope he has two years left. I fear he will bolt after his jr. year, which will still be too early imo. Tons of work needed before he is anywhere near nba ready. Staying 4 years might hurt his draft position, but it could help him in avoiding becoming a bust.

I don't think it would be difficult at all to play Rodney in a lot of games that are within 5-6 points, in fact I think he played quite a bit in the end/middle of the UNC game and Western Kentucky game. I'd imagine you are going to see Rodney playing at the ends of games a lot this season.
