per the Post Bulletin:
FELDY: Jerry Kill seems like a barnstorming type of guy. That's probably why everyone at Somerby Golf Club enjoyed listening to him when the Gophers coaches summer barnstorming tour of the state came to the area earlier this week. Kill made a lot of points about his football team that went 6-7 last year. He thinks it is better right now than it was after a 34-31 loss to Texas Tech in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Gosh darn, I want to believe the ol' coach, but is he telling the truth or am I just buying into his Midwestern charm?
PHERSY: Feldy, why wouldn't they be better? They were young last season, and now Kill has another year with the group under his belt. This is a team that inserted a true freshman quarterback into the lineup and still managed to be competitive (sometimes). Are there still areas of concern? Of course. But I do believe Kill is building something here. We're seeing players improve, and that will lead to more wins. Feldy, you're not the type of guy who's going to predict a backslide in 2013, are you?
FELDY: Yes, the Gophers were young last season, but they only won two Big Ten games. They only came within eight points of one other conference opponent. So, yeah, they should be improved after that kind of season. They'll win three of their non-conference games and probably find their way back to a bowl. But this is year three for Kill and his staff. Shouldn't we expect more than six wins and a sub-.500 conference record by now?
PHERSY: Two conference wins seems to be the norm for this program over the last few years. Yes, I do expect an increase in that area during the 2013 season. The third season for Kill is important, but remember Feldy, he was hired late and missed out on one full recruiting class. So we're into the second full recruiting class. Before you start calling for his head (I'm assuming that will come soon enough), let him get into the fourth year. If we don't see this team finishing in the top half of the Big Ten by his fifth season, Feldy, we'll let you fire him.
FELDY: I'm not ready to fire Kill. He's done a nice job since taking over the mess that Coach Brew left him. Kill deserves at least a couple more seasons before someone starts FireJerryKill.com. But if he's going to drop decent non-conference opponents like North Carolina and keep the directional Illinois schools, then we can't say this team is improving unless they start winning conference games. Phersy, you mentioned the team's young QB earlier. What can we expect out of Philip Nelson in '13?
PHERSY: I'd be shocked if he didn't improved. And with Mitch Leidner pushing him, Nelson must improve if he wants to play. He already showed a great deal of poise for a true freshman, and I'm glad Kill threw the kid in there last season. What I would like to see Nelson improve is his ability to go through progressions. He will be more comfortable with the offense, so it seems likely that he would improve in all phases. He's a gifted athlete, and I expect greatness from him right away in 2013. Feldy, the defense has been awful. Is there any reason to get excited about what's happening on that side of the ball?
FELDY: Kill told the crowd at Somerby that turning around this program is going to be a process and there's no quick fix. The defense lost three of its top five tacklers and top defensive back Michael Carter, all of whom won't be easy to replace. But thinking back to the loss to Texas Tech, the only direction the defense can go is up.
