PHERSY: Well, Feldy has hit the road for beet country (North Dakota), so another NoDak transplant seemed the perfect fill-in. Thanks for joining me Mr. Ruff. Yes, you've earned the Mr. title ... for one post, anyway. Mr. Ruff, your favorite college football team is preparing for its bowl game — the Quick Lane Bowl is Monday in Michigan. How seriously are you taking this bowl game? If the Gophers, who have lost five of their last six games, secure victory over Central Michigan, is it worth celebrating or does it mean very little in your eyes?
RUFF: Here is how seriously I'm taking the Quick Lane Bowl: I didn't even know when it was scheduled for until now, or one thing about Central Michigan. I want to take a "quick lane" away from this disastrous season and start looking forward to next year. Nobody looks forward to things better than I do. After some tough hits the last month, with a handful of recruits de-committing and Minnesota having let go its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, things have rebounded nicely with some key recruitment commits. That group is led by quarterback Seth Green, who I recall you telling me there was no reasonable chance he'd land here. Explain why you were wrong.
PHERSY: Without knowing what's happened behind the scenes in Green's life, it's tough to say. He went from one of the nation's most sought-after recruits to not even being a full-time starter for his new high school down in Texas. He de-committed from Oregon long ago, and suddenly the Gophers were back on his radar. I don't know the circumstances surrounding his Oregon de-commitment. And frankly, who cares ... if he can come in, maintain his grades, stay out of trouble and help this football team move forward, Green will be a breath of fresh air for a program that regressed this season. Now here's the real question — is Tracy Claeys truly willing to hold an open tryout between Mitch Leidner, Demry Croft and Green?
