RPIs listed are through Sunday's games and are courtesy of collegerpi.com. Yes, I'm fully aware the RPI is meaningless this early in the season with so little information. We'll watch the RPI gradually take its shape as more games are played.

Bits & Pieces
(1) Don't forget that ESPN's 24-hour college hoops marathon begins tonight with Cal State Fullerton at UCLA (11 p.m./ESPN), followed by San Diege State at St. Mary's (1 a.m./ESPN), followed by Northern Colorado at Hawaii (3 a.m./ESPN). ... you get the idea. Games will be show on ESPN as well as ESPN2 and ESPNU.
(2) Tough break for Kevin Coble and Northwestern. Never want to see that happen. Hope the kid decides to redshirt and comes back next year full strength with what by then will be an experienced and battle-tested squad.
(3) It was a kick-in-the-n*ts opening week for Samford. The Bulldogs lost three games (Green Bay, host Kent State & UAB) at the Hispanic College Fund Classic by a total of 8 points.
(4) Most impressive team I've seen so far on the tube. ... the U-Dub Huskies. Thus far I'm much more impressed with the Huskies than the other preseason Pac 10 favorite, Cal. U-Dub's athleticism reminds me of the Gophers, except Lorenzo Romar's teams are more about offense, while Tubby Smith's teams are more about defense.
(5) Tip of the cap to these guys: The only conferences not to schedule a single non-Division I opponent were the Big East, Metro Atlantic and Northeast.
(6) Coach with the hottest seat after Week 1 has to be Fordham's Dereck Whittenburg. After finishing last season 3-25 (1-15 in the A-10), the Rams opened their season by losing 76-73 at home to America East bottom-feeder Maine. Yikes!
(7) Some of the major early-season tournaments begin this week. Here are some picks for the title games. ... Charleston Classic (Penn State over LaSalle); Coaches vs. Cancer Classic (North Carolina over Syracuse); NIT Season Tip-Off (UConn over Duke); Paradise Jam (Purdue over Tennessee); and Puerto Rico Tip-Off (Villanova over Dayton).
(8) Week 1's most stunning result? Has to be Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 67-43 shellacking of trendy Pac 10 sleeper Oregon State in Lubbock.
