The final Rivals ranking has us at #57 - which sounds about right to me.

Meanwhile, College Football News has us at #71 - the worst ranking of any team with a winning season. Our final CFN ranking for 2007 was 114. At the very least, I will be happy if we can move up another 43 spots next year to finish in the "also receiving votes" of the major polls.

What a jump

These seem to be two very different criteria to get to numbers that mean very little. Having said that, it is difficult to argue given that, it hard for me to think that we had a bottom half years with a 43 spot improvement. In reality one additonal win in conferrence or even at the bowl game probably would have put this team into the 50s.

I hope that the Gophs can build on this year and don't experience any backsliding next season. The question will be can the Gophers and their fans handle the double-edged sword that is a schedule that is unlike anything I can remember since becoming a diehard fan. The same record with the 2009 schedule should put the Gophers into the 30s for sure. Maybe higher?

Basically CFN punished the Gophers more for their late season swoon than Rivals did.

CFN has us behind Illinois and FL-Atlantic.

Riiiiight.

I don't agree with the ranking but we didn't put up a strong argument. The Gophers regressed at the end of the season and FAU certainly improved. I still think we would beat them if we played tomorrow but I can understand where they're coming from and their opinion isn't very relevant. I don't know what they saw in Illinois to rationalize their ranking.

I think the loss of both coordinators probably affected the rankings.
