Rittenberg on 1500 right now

It was a good interview. But as soon as Rittenberg hung up, they started ripping into the Gophers, saying that we should have trophy games with Lousiana-Monroe and NDSU. Are they trying to get people to turn the dial? Just when I start thinking that we're getting some fair coverage, they start talking smack.

From what I recall:

1. Started by talking about 9 games, and it appears that is the big sticking point, since some teams (guess who) won't be able to stock up with 7 or 8 home games every year. Rittenberg seems to think that the alignment is pretty much a done deal (although he did not say what it would be) and trying to flesh out the 8 or 9 game conference schedule was all that was left to do.

2. Some talk on alignment, and the issues - nothing new

3. Gophers. Reusse stated that Weber has to be better, right? Stated that he believes that they should be better than 2 wins. Reiterated that he is far from a Gopher homer (no sh|t, Sherlock). But overall he was not nearly as snarky as usual.

4. Wisconsin. Reusse: Are they overrated? Rittenberg: They better hope that the QB does not go down, and there are some holes in the D. A Gopher win there would be great.

5. tOSU. Pryor should be throwing the ball more this year, and admitted that he thought the D bailed him out numerous times last year.

6. PSU. Why in the world do we have a trophy game vs. them? We'll never get our hands on it. Unaware that the series stands at 7-4 in favor of PSU. Rittenberg jumped in with the number of all B10 players lost, zero experience at QB, and thinks this might be a good chance for Gopher victory at home.

7. Rittenberg leaves. This is my issue with most of the radio personalities in the cities. When Rittenberg is on, in deference to them, they try to do a job of interviewing/reporting. I don't know if they don't want to look like @ssholes to national media or what. But for the first time the sidekick jumps in with the idea of starting a trophy game vs. LA Monroe so we have a chance of winning at least one. "Maybe vs. UND, but UND would win that one 1 out of every three years. HAHAHAHA. Reusse jumps in with a suggestion of getting a trophy game vs. St. Thomas.

Overall (while Rittenberg was on) I was pleased with the job Reusse did. It's the childish crap after he left me that sticks in my craw.

I'm sorry, but this is a little funny. Might as well have a little sense of humor about our trophy game drought.

You know, I wonder why he hasn't gotten snagged up by the national media. Oh, wait, they like people with informed opinions. The problem in this market is that a couple generations of people in the media have been trained that this crap is normal. People in the media wonder why we get upset when they resort to smack talk against the local team. There are very few places around the country where this crap will fly. People are just stuck in a bubble here.

Who is the last sports media person to make it at a larger market? I mean Rittenburg went from Chicago to ESPN. Do we have that kind of sports journalist talent?

I'm sure there are many others - just two that popped into my head.

I don't know if it's a matter of talent, but the toxic bubble that the local media works in and thinks is normal doesn't help anyone land a job outside of the bubble. I'd like to see outside talent brought in from outside the bubble, bring in someone who doesn't think it is his job to run smack against the local team, and who does think it is his job to be will-informed. I don't expect the local media to be cheerleaders (although much of the country does), but it shouldn't be a point of pride to "not be a homer".

Jim Caple writes for ESPN and Steve Aschburner wrote for SI until sometime in 2009. and Don Banks still does I think.

There was also a female Vikings beat writer (Selena Roberts?) who left to take another job and the goofballs in that locker room crowed about how they ran her out of town. She went to the NY Times.

Brad Nessler graduated from Mankato State and I believe did his fisrst play by play stuff there... Don't really know for sure though...

Thanks. It seems like there is an avenue for success. Did I correct the dots correctly and see that is lies through the Vikes?

Even Inga Hammond made the national scene with the Golf Channel. Good luck to both Phatrick and Burrito Boy in trying to reach greener pastures. At least Inga was cute! All they will ever be are media has-beens who thrive on trash talking.

We were talking about moving up in the world.

Actually, it started out about Rittenberg on 1500, but the original post is usually moot by about the 4th response.

Telegenic? Yes. In person? Not so much...but everyone has their own taste.
