RichRod has to be done at Michigan

I was just lurking on some Michigan boards to see what is being said. The mood reminds me a lot of how it was here before Brew got ousted. Not quite 100 percent in favor of firing him but no one sounds too sad to see him go. Throwing out all the same names too. Harbaugh to UM seems to be gaining momentum.

...and Mullen may be the best of the young coaches - isn't he something like 38?

Mullen is a rich man too. He just signed a new 10 million dollar contract. I might be persuaded to stay in Starkville for that much money too.

DickRod must be gone. This is an absolute embarassment to a once proud program. This won't stand in Michigan, especially against a fringe top 25 team. I find it very funny myself. It sure is interesting how Michigan had an okay year, Michigan St. had a wonderful year, and we're going into the postseason in a happier mood than either of those squads. Michigan St. looked like frauds today as well. There will be some head scratching over there. The Big 10 sure is a long way from being as good as the SEC...

Amen to all of that. My picks going into Bowl Season all look pretty ridiculous. I thought both Michigan teams would compete and might even win.

We yak about it a lot in here, but Alabama has a lot of 4-star (and a couple of 5-star) guys running around out on the field. Coaching and retention are important, but it's always nice to have a stable of talented guys out there for you. You could see that today. I was watching Martin return punts. He has to be one of the two or three fastest guys in the Big 10 and he looked slow compared to the Bama punt coverage team.

Just saw this tweet.

@nicoleauerbach Denard Robinson asked if he'll be here next year if Rodriguez isn't. He said: "No response."

For as bad as Michigan really is, SI will still be there with a cover line next September after the Wolverines beat a handful of lightweights about how "Michigan's Back!"

Replace "Michigan" with "Notre Dame," and I agree. The Irish winning their last four games this year sets things up for some classic Touchdown Jesus hype going into next year, to be followed by the inevitable late-season beatdowns.

I looked for but couldn't find a cover from Sept 2009 with just that byline "Michigan's Back!" after they beat something like Central Mich., Eastern Mich. and Youngstown St.

It's time to start the discussion of whether or not Rodriguez was the worst coaching hire in college football history. I can't believe he hasn't been fired today yet.

I hope Mich. keeps Rich Rod. I hate him, but as long as he is there Mich. won't be a power. They get a good coach and they will.

I actually disagree. I think Michigan goes 9-3 next year. They only had something like 9 seniors on the entire roster. The defense was brutal, but there were a bunch of freshmen playing. It goes right along with what Rodriguez did at West Virginia. Lose big, lose small, win small, win big.

Did anyone really think Mich St was that good?

I was not impressed with them all season.

Michigan may be the most fundemetally challenged defensive team in the Big Ten. They got nothing on the Gophers as far as that is concerned. It must be pretty tough for the Michigan fans to take. Minnesota improved and played decent defense in the last few games, that did not happen at Michigan.

Will Michigan boosters be happy with the time it takes to get there though?

It would be a stupid decision to get rid of him, IMHO. He's making steady progress and while I am sure the frustration is serious, the improvement however is undeniable. The cupboard was bare when he arrived and he's gradually filling it back up. They could be an actual competitor next year. Could certainly challenge on the Legends side.

the Michigan boards are saying predicting that they'll probably get 9 wins next year with DickRod maybe 6/7 wins with Harbaugh/someone else. Although almost everyone is also saying DickRod is out next year unless those 9 wins gets them a big ten championship.

I don't think so. Michigan, Notre Dame, etc. boosters all seem to be ignoring the fact that it isn't 1985 anymore. There is much more parity these days, and the impatience they show is turning them into a punchline. To not give a guy like Rodriguez a fourth year, after he has shown steady progress, seems to me to be a head-in-the-clouds move.

I think you are right there. Notre Dame is the poster child for ignoring everything else going on around them in college football. I don't think those schools realize that their brand is tarnished and there are other up and coming programs that might be a little bit more glamorous right now. If I were a coach, would the pressure from boosters be enough to make me leery of them? Probably. I don't know if it would be worth it money wise, because if you fail and are asked to leave, that would be a big black mark on your coaching career. I suppose that's why they get paid more than I'll ever earn.

The money thing is funny, because Mullen, Petersen, and Patterson have showed that these days, coaches can get paid anywhere. I think a lot of coaches share your wariness of the boosters. That is why Notre Dame and Michigan have had some difficulty attracting coaches the last couple go-rounds. Unrealistic expectations and a delusional fan base.

With the scholarship limits today, the day of a perenniel dynasty is Pretty much over. Ohio State is doing pretty well, but Fla. and Tex. are all having problems. You will have alot of the same teams fighting for the conf. titles, but the overall dominance is over.

Add to the limits the fact that a lot of 4-star and 5-star guys who end up at the "top" schools leave after their junior (or red-shirt sophomore) year and that turnover causes problems. It's why programs like Wisconsin and Iowa (who concentrate on getting solid line prospects and keeping them around for five years) can be consistent.
