10PM Update

Shaka spent the day talking to both friends and family about what to do. I know for a fact Billy D has told him to go to UCLA. Many people are telling him to do what he thinks is best for his career. He really wants to take one of these jobs but Maya his wife is dead set on the city life in Richmond. She simply loves it.

Shaka's agent at one point thought a deal would get done today with VCU but it did NOT. Shaka is expected to visit with Norwood Teague tomorrow. I'm not sure where the meeting is whether Norwood is comming to Richmond or Shaka is going to MN.

People within VCU are starting to get very nervous as they expected this to be an easy process. The word is they thought they could get him quickly to agree to stay. They are having problems meeting many of his demands very few are about money. The thought is this is the last upgrade of a contract that is really possible for Smart at VCU. If he agrees to a deal here the thought is this is the BEST VCU can give him.

The rumor I'm hearing is Norwood has been calling big money donors all day/night to work out a deal for an out of the world practice facility. Perhaps some people on Gopher Hole have been contacted?

Richmond's city life? I admit I've never been there, but I have to think Mpls offers more if you're looking for city life.

Shaka, just pull a Greg Jennings and leave already. You know you want to.

Richmond city life is two posters having a fisticuff in the gutter with a big fat guy eating hot dogs as the referee.

LOL; I love the PAV hot dog eating guy already!!! Maybe he can be our Friend of Tubby replacement!!

Maya Smart is a writer and a Harvard and Northwestern alum. If she is the sticking point, they need to sell her on Minneapolis' cultural offerings (Guthrie Theater, Minnesota Orchestra, etc.).

MN cultural offerings are non-existent once you actually go somewhere with real cultural offerings. Ultimately, her guy can make $2 mil per year and be a hero to an entire state by coming here...can't do that at VCU or UCLA or any of the other schools that have chased him. Here, he could become the legacy that all that follow are compared too...our wooden, valvano, knight, izzo, etc. Best BB conference year in and out.

Shaka come to MN and you will be legen....wait for it, wait for it....dary!

No arguments or serious discussions allowed on GopherHole tonight.

Can we stop with the stupid polls threads refreshing to the top (thanks GH) and cluttering it all up. It is not the night for that stuff.

Not true. Both visual and performance arts are very strong in the Twin Cities and much stronger than Richmond. I know both areas.

I drove thru Richmond in about 3 minutes...The downtown is decrepid looking and if there's city life, I imagine its more in the vein of pool halls and pubs...I doubt Maya is into the life night life. That is the funniest part of his "press release."

Richmond is a cool town. It's fairly large and I'm not about to knock it. I've been to some real trble (since it's March Madness) places and Richmond is certainly not one of them. It also has much better climate than MN.

That said, Mpls is far more culturally connected than Richmond. Mpls has the second most theater seats per capita in the country and has a rich appreciation of the arts and music. I don't personally care about any of that stuff (I know, it sounds dumb), but I know it's good place for someone who does.

I also live in LA. LA is everything you'd imagine LA to be. You either like it or you don't. I am not sure how culturally rounded I would describe LA, it's like a complete different planet.

That said, I can't imagine that someone living in Richmond, Virginia would think of their museums and arts as being superior to Mpls or LA.

Richmond is a nice place, it really is. I'd live there. It's just like saying I'm choosing Mpls for the BBQ.

Gopherhole=way way 2 much credit for Shaka Smart. From reading this stuff u would think just by hiring him we'd be the #1 program in the Big Ten. Get over it.

Wait! What? We are superior to Richmond? Your crazy. (Read Sarcasm)

I wasn't comparing Mpls to Richmond...as neither are serious contenders for the prize.

It's fine. But it's like saying you'd prefer a warmer Des Moines to MSP. Unless his wife hates cold weather (and it snowed 28" not far from Richmond a couple weeks ago) there's not much of an advantage there.

Minneapolis > Richmond as far as things to do. Richmond does offer great Arts and History for the local area and a proximity to Washington DC. It all depends on what a person is searching for in an area. Personally, I like this area and would choose it over Minneapolis only because the Twin Cities are just a bit too big for me. Richmond has a city feel, but also a small town feel if that makes sense to outsiders. Plus I love history.

But I know St. Paul was voted the #1 city in America (a few years back) and try to inform it to my southern friends all the time, who only view Minnesota as snow.

Philadelphia, Boston, LA, Washington DC, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Seattle to name a few more.

I respectfully disagree. I live in the Washington DC's Virginia suburbs, have lived in LA, and am familiar with the arts scenes in each of the cities you have named. My wife is an artist with a degree in fine arts from UCLA. We travel a lot, and at one time or another we have visited a large percentage of the major art museums in this country. The Twin Cities are very strong in the arts, and compare favorably to all of these cities. In terms of live theatre, my understand is that MSP ranks second only to New York. I recently read an article that ranked MSP in the top five for literature. I could go on.

I've visited, or lived in LA, DC, Phoenix, Seattle, as well as New York, Chicago, SanFran and for that matter all over East Asia (Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, etc.) and parts of Europe and the Middle East.

If we're comparing Minneapolis to the likes of LA, obviously it's a smaller, more insular place and I'll be the first to admit that there is a lot of work to be done to make downtown a more lively destination. However, writing from experience, the thrust of your argument is utter balderdash.

The problem is, in my experience, those who haven't been to Minnesota view it pretty much the way you'd present it, as a place anybody with intellectual or cultural interests would never willing choose to live. Ridiculous. Phoenix? I like Phoenix, but really?

Richmond's city life? I admit I've never been there, but I have to think Mpls offers more if you're looking for city life.

i've driven through Richmond many times...Shaka's wife has a low bar for what one would consider a great city.
