Barreiro had Richard on yesterday. Really good listen. (5:30-6:00pm)

  • Loved MN and misses it.
  • Talks to Coyle regularly (His wife is more bitter joking)
  • Arena is not the problem. Kids don't come for arenas. Says that a Wrigley fix is needed for fan experience and amenities.
  • Knows his name comes up and he will always answer the phone but is currently in a really good place.
  • "We beat Niko twice, so I will gladly talk about him..." Joking
  • "Niko would be a home run"
  • Hire doesn't have to be like PJ. "PJ is another level and that's a compliment."
  • MN is not a bad job and no bottom of Power conferences.
  • Need a group to step up and support MN to the next level.
  • Had Tonje committed and WI came in at last second.
  • Doesn't get caught up in portal drama and can move on.
  • Really chose to play faster pace at NM due to altitude advantages they have
  • Just win and it will be good.

Great recap, Maxy...thanks for posting.

Is it too sentimental to say I miss Pitino? The person, not necessarily the coach, although he really seems to have found himself in Albuquerque.

I have never been more wrong with a person that I was with Richard Pitino. When we hired him, I knew nothing about him, and assumed that he was a spoiled, given everything, arrogant guy who was riding his dad's coat tails.

He was modest, funny, embraced the culture, and throughly enjoyed his time here. Wish it would have worked out for him.

Still think Richard will end up having a really nice career, but we shouldn't have pulled the trigger on hiring him until after he had a New Mexico type job or many more years at FIU.
It's kind of a what might have been for me. He was a bit derailed by a couple injury laden seasons. I think Niko can be better here.

Albuquerque is nice (I've been there twice). Perhaps, Raleigh, NC is better.

With how flux the Mountain West is, perhaps the ACC is better. No guarantees there though either.

MWC is nice, but it might be a bit over-rated. SDSU made the championship game, but last night fell to below .500 in all-time NCAA. No MWC team has a winning tournament record. Combined they are: 31-66.

Yeah, injuries were definitely an issue for Pitino's teams. Wouldve been interesting to see if the 2016-17 team could've made an NCAA run had Springs not gotten injured in the Big10 tourney semis. Then of course in 2018-19 we best Louisville in the first round but lose Murphy to injury 🙄.
Still, as others have said, was time to move on. Problem was we moved on in the wrong direction. So four yrs later here we are.

He said one thing about Medved that I really liked hearing.

Barreiro asked him how he would describe the way Niko's teams play. His answer specifically used John Beilein as the example. Said Niko likes to space the floor with 5 guys that can all shoot it. Beilien's West Virginia and Michigan teams certainly were that way and fun to watch.

Replacing Pitino with Johnson was the hoops equivalent of replacing Mason with Brewster.
We replaced a competent, if not spectacular, coach with a guy who had no business and no resume for the position and it imploded.

He's a very interesting coach to listen to. Great insight. Night and day compared to the last guy.

He never comes across as phony to me which is what I've always liked about him (maybe I'm wrong). Wish it had worked out better.
Makes you wonder how the last guy blew Coyle away in the interview. I could see Richard doing that but not Johnson.

Local sports authorities are driving the narrative that Ben did not have the support or money to win. So, going forward that will be the takeaway.

Great interview, as he usually is. He was very open about his time here. My one nit: He says he's not a better coach now than he was here. I disagree.
Humility - he's always seemed like a really humble guy and it's a personality trait consistently found in successful people in leadership roles in any field. It's really striking considering his father, too. I've always considered Rick a rather arrogant dude

Which of those teams are bailing for the PAC-Whatever?

I liked him personally. Always a good interview. Seamed like a nice guy. I wasn’t a fan of his offense don't know if he has changed that much at NM. He missed on a couple of recuits. Bringing in that jelly kid was a big miss and I think he should have figured that out hand writting was on the wall for him. Injuries hurt also but everbody has to deal with them. I think it was time for him to go.

My thoughts exactly

What if Brew turns Charlotte into a formidable team? I don't see it happening, but what if? Would he get an interview with Dan?

Interesting interview.

I do wonder if Williams arena could be renovated where the seating and experience is better then it is. I did get to the barn this year for Women's game for first time in many years and compared to Mariucci the seating was not very steep and no leg room at all and not very comfortable. Then after row 22 it is just old fashioned bench seats. It would be interesting to look at a scenario where the floor is dropped and the seating would be similar to the Taylor Center at MSU but hold 6-8K instead of 4.8K Taylor Center does. I have also heard since Mariucci changed to NHL arena, it would be more capable of being an arena for basketball as well? St. John's is having games at Madison Square Gardens, so why not for possible rivalry games could the Gophers use the Target Center? Sometimes special games at special locations bring a buzz of excitement.

It also seems to be Richard switched is offensive mind set at NM. I do think fans want

1) Top opponents to go against on somewhat regular basis. Not going to spend $ per game on season tickets when high percentage of home games are vs teams not likely to make NCAA tournament.

2) Entertaining team to watch(mostly offensively). I know I would rather go a game where my team loses 87-83 against a good team and fun up and down the floor vs winning 61 to 55 vs a mediocre team and having many shot clock violations. Caitlin Clark did not fill the seats in all those arenas because of her D. It was because she was exciting running up the court making awesome passes and logo 3's.

NIL - There has to be a happy medium of support the revenue sharing for players and knowing there is a lot of talent out there for a coach to be able to get players that fit his style without having to just think paying $ for top end talent that are all just about the $. It is hard for a player these days to not try to get the $ colleges somehow able to throw out. But there are also plenty of smaller teams in same NIL or less than current gophers that know how to make it work. Again Caitlin Clark made more of NIL endorsement outside of what Iowa's NIL I would think. High percentage of college athletes don't play professionally afterwards. Can you sell the vision of NIL through being setup with a career afterwards to be successful? For those top end talent can you sell the NIL opportunities that will come from the outside market, like CC, if they create a buzz like CC did. There also usually is a higher price the more NIL player gets with expectations, media commitments, social media pressure, outside no and not being able to go places without being interrupted. Also building a winning team vs top opponents and make NCAA runs will help your NIL a lot. I am sure many top players of other teams, if given opportunity would play for Duke for no NIL.

Sounds like Niko is more offensive. Did watch some highlights where shot clock was well above 10 to get their first shot. Will he be able to do that in the big 10 is a ?

Rah!

Two things. First, Coach Brew was the interim head coach at Charlotte this fall and expressed an interest in being named HC going forward. He didn't get the job and it doesn't appear that he was retained on staff by the new coach. I am not aware of him getting a new job.

Second, notwithstanding any of that, I would think Dan would be thrilled to get an opportunity to interview Tim Brewster at any time. He'd milk that audio until he retires.
