It can't be bright after today's beat down by Ohio St. I'm predicting another Big Ten opening soon.

No. even with today Michigan loss. Rich Rod is safe for at least 1 more year. they going bowling.

Michigan only has 12 seniors on the entire roster, one of whom (a starter) has been hurt all season. Despite this, they are going to a bowl game and rebounded to beat a couple teams after a bad stretch, showing some toughness. Their best player, one of the most exciting in the country, is only a sophomore. Rodriguez has had three recruiting classes, ranked 8, 10, and 20. The 8th and 10th ranked classes are just starting to become juniors. This year's class should be top-20 as well. Most importantly, the team has improved steadily each year he has been there and has improved as HIS players have entered the system. The extra bowl practices will only serve to help this very talented, and very young, team.

To fire Rodriguez would be a dumb, knee-jerk reaction by the Michigan athletic department. I will repeat what I said in an earlier thread: if Rodriguez is fired, we should hire him immediately. At the very least, it would be fun to watch Gray and Mcknight operate in that offense.

If Rodriguez doesn't get fired, I would predict a 9-win season for Michigan next year.

You guys might be surprised, there is a strong feel this will happen in Michigan. I hope it doesn't, because the first guy the call will be Hoke.

Actually, Hoke would probably be the 3rd guy they call behind Harbaugh and Les Miles.

It's Michigan, not Minnesota. No need to assume low self esteem, insular attitude towards new coach. It's a helmet school. All three with local connections could get consideration, but then a Gary Patterson or a Jon Gruden gets the job.

Rodriguez is 6-18 in the big ten.

The insiders have it that Harbaugh would walk on all fours from Palo Alto if offered the Michigan job.

Hoke would be my 2nd choice...and who I hope the Gophers get.

Golden is my 2nd choice for gophers.

There is some question as to how Harbuagh feels about Michigan. I think he'd be MUCH more likely to be looking for an NFL gig. He's likely not coming here either though...

I like Golden over Hoke. Hoke does nothing for me. I think Harbaugh is looking to the NFL to make big $$ and a big name for himself. Harbaugh has criticized Mich., but I do not think that he would pass the job over, unless a sweet NFL job was open. Rich Rod will only get fired if Harbaugh commits to coming over to Mich, which will not happen so Rich Rod is safe for one more season. I personally would not want rich rod in MN. I do not think he is as good of a coach as advertised. Believe me, Mich. did not think that they would still be middle tier in the B10 in Rich Rod's 3rd season and neither did I. I am not sold on Rich Rod.

No, there really isn't a question. It is his dream job. He would like nothing better than to return the program to top 5-10 status. Its possible after he does that he goes to the NFL but that would be after he 'succeeded' at Michigan...which for us would be contending for Natl. Championships not just Big Ten titles.

We've been over this a million times, but let's just review.

Harbaugh, in his first year as Stanford coach, told the San Francisco Chronicle in May: "Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there, but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in, and when they're in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They're adulated when they're playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won't hire them."

Harbaugh isn't going to Michigan. He burned that bridge.

National Championships... Lots of powerhouses in college football right now. Somehow Michigan will not only be better than OSU and NEB, but even SEC, B12, P10 teams. I'm not sure if you know this, but the SEC is the king of recruiting right now. Coaches are selling them that the SEC is superior, and that the best way to prepare them for sundays is to play the best weekly. Only 2 teams in the SEC are not going to a bowl. Rich Rod did great at WV, but Michigan is a better program, so he will obviously dominate at Michigan right? With that kind of fan base and recruiting ability, there is no way he will fail right? Looks like the writing is on the wall for Rich Rod so we all know how that worked out. Thing is you never know how it will turn out.

IF 6-18 in big Ten Play was enough to get a coach at Minnesota...

extended for 58.33% of a season and a 6-21 Big Ten record is enough to get a coach at Minnesota fired, mid-season, just what does a 6-18 Big Ten record at Michigan mean for a Michigan football coach? OSU has beaten them 7 straight times now. The "faithful" and the powers that may be in Ann Arbor have got to be severely humiliated by now. What will become of poor Rich-Rod? Maybe the Michigan A.D should hire a p.r. guy as an assistant. The Big Ten numbers thing appears to be working out about the same for the U of M and the other U of M...

It was a non quote-saying something everyone knows is true means nothing-meechigan wants to win again, so speaking the truth will be forgiven

Only 2 teams in the SEC are not going to a bowl.

The Big 10 coaches have a lot to sell too. Only 3 Big 10 teams aren't going to a bowl game this year, the Big 10 has 3 of the top 10 teams and the SEC has 2 of the top 10 teams. Granted, this year the SEC has a slight edge top to bottom over the Big 10, but the two conferences aren't worlds apart like your post suggests. Plus the Big 10 has huge resources (money), maybe more than any other league.

Buyout Drops After 01/01/2011

From ESPN:

"It appears as if athletic director Dave Brandon will wait until after Michigan's bowl game before he makes an announcement on the fate of coach Rich Rodriguez, from which we can only deduce that Brandon plans to replace the embattled coach.

After all, Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press points out, Brandon isn't going to learn anything about RichRod and the program in the next five weeks that he doesn't already know, and if he plans to bring Rodriguez back there's no reason he couldn't say so now. Leaving his coach in limbo just undermines his authority with the team and on the recruiting trail.

Moreover, if Brandon waits until after Jan. 1 to fire Rodriguez, the coach's buyout drops from $4 million to $2.5 million (does this mean that despite the NCAA violations, Brandon has determined that he cannot fire Rodriguez with cause?); it would allow rumored target Jim Harbaugh to coach Stanford's bowl game; and it would give Rodriguez time to look for another job (perhaps bringing about a scenario in which Rodriguez resigns and is not fired).

All that said, one thing might make Brandon move more quickly: By January, NFL owners will have a pretty good idea whether they plan to change coaches, meaning that there conceivably could be more (and deeper-pocketed) suitors for Harbaugh."

I figured they would give him another year since Michigan has gotten progressively better under him each year...but I also don't doubt that their Big Ten record & lack of Defense is pushing them to get rid of him not to mention that Harbaugh runs a an Offense Michigan fans are more used to...

They'd be nuts to fire Rodriguez at this point. He's been recruiting well and should get a chance to go through one recruiting cycle (4 or 5 years depending on how one counts that).

I'm not sure what RichRod's job security is looking like nowadays, but he sure did sound defensive in his post-game presser yesterday. Not defensive in a bad way like lashing out against anyone, but defensive in continuing to reiterate that "Hey, we're on the way. I am firmly convinced of that, and we WILL get there", and he repeated that or some variation of that line over and over and over again. Whether that was directed towards his bosses, the fans, the media or a combination of all the above, who knows, but it seems highly obvious that he's feeling the heat from somewhere.
