Rhys Lloyd Interview

Lloyd is one of my favorite all-time Gophers.

Same here. He was a great kicker, and hit some big time kicks over the years, including to beat Sconnie, but my favorite thing about him was his random fake punts, including some that Mase obviously did not order. He was just a chubby little dude who'd just take off whenever he seemingly felt like it. Awesome.

I do like how he said the Penn State game his junior year was his "best game by far," and not the Wisconsin game. I would agree. The onside kick to start the game, a 44-yard field goal, and a big 30-yarder late that ended up being huge when PSU drove to our 13-yard-line in the waning moments and had to go for the end zone. Plus, he averaged 45 yards on five punts.

Wouldn't it be sorta nice to have that kind of kicking game these days?

I loved Rhys as a character, but how soon we forget, a very average kicker--

2003/04 Lloyd 26-36 on FG (72.2%), including 12-18 (66.7) his Senior year. Missed 6 XP, averaged 39.5 yards a punt.

2009/10 Ellestad 24-34 on FG (70.5%), including 11-17 (64.7%) his Senior year. Missed 1 XP. Orseske career average is 37.5 yards. Both noted on this board as having awful seasons/careers.

It's college football folks, these are pretty typical numbers.

Yeah, he wasn't consistent by any means. But he did put down two of the biggest kicks we've had since Dan Nystrom in that Wisconsin game and the Oregon bowl game, and that alone puts him in positive light in my eyes lol. I'll be honest though, I didn't realize his numbers were THAT close to Ellstad's.

LLoyd had a longer range than Ellestad. The percentage is misleading, because LLoyd was trying longer kicks than Ellestad was.

Hate to say it, but you're probably "wrong". Lloyd attempted only 13 FG in his entire career over 40 yards and made 6. He was 2 of 5 on 50 yarders, both made in his first two games as a Gopher. He made one FG over 40 yards his Senior year. He did make GW kicks against Wisconsin and Oregon and had the great onside kick against PSU.

Ellestad beat Syracuse, and made clutch kicks against Air Force in 2009. He made a huge kick against Illinois and made a great onside kick and two FG against Iowa in 2010.

Rhys has a bigger than life personality, Eric is a quiet one. But to say that Lloyd is a great kicker and Ellestad was not, well...

You break down all your percentages and stats, but Lloyd gave us a victory over Wisconsin, something no other kicker or player has been able to do since. That, to me, is worth more than any amount of onside kicks or clutch winners against squads that really don't matter.

I love how his goal was increased fitness, then when asked what he was going to do in the offseason- just relax! Very much like my ny resolutions!
