Per Pat:

The Chairman has gone so far as to make notes with letter grades, adjust those, look for flaws, but he wasn’t able to come up with a D in the bunch.
There were two rules:
  1. No + or - could accompany the grade, because that’s the easy way out.
  2. No public input was sought, because let’s face it, fans are basically emotional youths when it comes to assessing coaches.

Grade C

Niko Medved, Gophers basketball
Bunch of transfers with C-level credentials. Nothing to judge yet, really, but he’s a C until the Chairman sees the nonconference schedule. If St. Thomas is on it, we’ll move him up to B.

Go Gophers!!

Can't say I disagree with Reusse's assessment of the current portal additions. I don't see much difference between Niko's portal class so far and Ben's last portal class of Mitchell, Edmonds, Odukale, Rigsby, Patterson and Cochran. All of Ben's recruits had good stats at a lower level of competition but were underwhelming against Big Ten competition. I don't see a real difference maker in Niko's recruits - hoping for some good portal additions in the near future.

I think it's a bit harsh to say that the transfers have C level credentials. As a group, I think they have B level anyway. Even the one whose commitment was viewed with the least enthusiasm by most here, Vaihola, probably has to be considered a B minus center when compared to the pool of transfer centers available.

Having said that, Niko still has work to do (3 more recruits anyway) so the overall grade could go down a bit depending upon who is recruited.

I did chuckle at this line:

"No public input was sought, because let’s face it, fans are basically emotional youths when it comes to assessing coaches."

Can't disagree with that although I would have been tempted to end the quote after the word "youths."

The UST nonsense is getting old. I'm an alumni of both schools (MN undergrad, UST grad). I don't understand the infatuation the newly minted D1 stepchild has with the U. It is damn near stalker-level and annoying. MN has nothing to gain and everything to lose at this point, while UST only benefits. I wouldn't play them, either. Find a different pimp.

Niko's class can definitely shoot free throws at a way higher clip!

Mid major players start our as either undersized, unathletic for their position, or under the radar. Patterson, Cochran, Odukale, and Mitchell had only 1 year left.
Patterson was unathletic, but scrappy. I Can't rate Cochran as a gopher, but he came in as a good 2-way player and 2nd team all Mac. Odukale and Edmunds were definitely athletic.
Odukale was a very good defender, not a shooter, but a better ball handler and passer than I thought. Edmunds was low on skills.
F. Mitchell is shorter, a bit heavy, but athletic enough, too bad that early injury set him back.
Rigsby was athletic and had some skill, but he was super inconsistent.
It's too bad Cochran was hurt, as he may have been the best 2-way player of Ben's recruits.

Niko's recruits:
Sf Durkin is rated highest of any of both classes. Highly skilled, a knock down shooter so far. Not an athlete, defense could be an issue. 6-7 220.

Willis is highly rated, 2nd team all MAC and at 6-2, 190 is not undersized as a PG and the fastest gopher over 6' we have had since maybe Kevin Clark. Not a good 3pt shooter.

Reynolds is 6-4 200lb wing player with very good athleticism, 1st team Big Sky. 41% from 3.
Omot is 6-8 195, super long and athletic, size is great for SF, way too slim for major PF minutes. Has the build to be an above average defender.

JCJ is an ok athlete 6-8 230 PF, solidly skilled, can hit the 3, post up some. A lefty.

Vaihola, 6-8 260, similar build to F. Mitchell, actually a good passer. Least excited about him. Backup on a decent team.

Willis and Reynolds have higher ceilings than any of Ben's last class because they are athletic, not undersized for their position, have good length, and have shown enough skill at the lower level. Time will tell. Most of these players have multiple seasons still, so younger and more time to improve, with better coaching. Asuma returns after a good year, and I am definitely hoping for another skilled big at the 4/5, and to add depth pieces as injuries are bound to happen.

On3 seems to have it much better than Johnson's class. Last year the 70.15 average of transfers in, and 11th in B1G. This year 76 average and 5th.

247 has Niko at 8th(89.83) in B1G and last year Johnson was 14th(87.33) .

Is this the guy that was pimping Ben Johnson?
Not really. He basically said he "he's going to get fired" since about December but "felt bad" for him. No calling him elite or saying he's doing spectacular though.

It occurs to me that Reusse posting one of his columns is the equivalent of a zoo visitor tapping on the glass of the GopherHole enclosure.
I once saw an orangutang at the San Diego Zoo pick up its shit and throw it at the visitors. Quite sure Reusse doesn't have as good an arm, but your analogy fits.

In case you missed it, we're the orangutan in Mulligan's analogy, not Reusse.

Not sure how there can be a (legitimate) grade at this point in time, unless of course the free agency haul included Danny Wolf, Walter Clayton, Cooper Flagg, and Braden Smith. That I think we could give an "A+".

Otherwise, no way of knowing until we see the free agent group on the court for at least 5-10 games.
