per Pat:
The word from Williams regulars on Nov. 30, after a fast-moving victory over Clemson in the ACC-Big Ten challenge, was: “Hey, the Gophers might be better than anticipated. They could beat a few Big Ten teams that you wouldn’t expect in the Barn.”
The word from those same folks on Dec. 5, after a double-overtime loss to South Dakota, was: “We knew this team was terrible. It’s just part of the rebuilding process before Richard’s prized recruiting class arrives and his transfers become eligible next season.”
On Tuesday night, there was a battle anticipated between these two theories. The opponent was South Dakota State, a team voted as the preseason favorite in the Summit League. South Dakota was projected to finish fifth in the nine-team league.
Thus, if the Gophers were able to handle the Summit favorite, the loss to South Dakota could be written off as a bad afternoon, and the Pitino faithful could get back to the post-Clemson theory: The Gophers might be better than anticipated.
