Reusse column, writes letter to Selection Committee, begs them not to pick Gophers

I will say this...Reusse hurts his arguement when he exaggerates the bad losses....While ugly and depressing, the Wisconsin loss wasn't a "bad" loss other than being bad because it hurt to lose it the way we did.

Another garbage column by D-Bag Reusse I will never read.

Anytime you only score 44 points in a game, it is just plain BAD no matter how you spin it.

Reusse is been on a dry drunk for twenty years. He's just mad at the world. Misery loves company. I don't think the Gophers deserve a bid but his drama filled column is pathetic. He showed his true colors when he called a group of college players clowns. Classless jerk! Thinks he is so clever. No talent hack!

Can't argue against any of his points...we can blame Tubby all we want but this is one of the lowest basketball IQ teams in the country and even lower in terms of their mental strength

Except, you know, the entire overall premise of the article?

Let's say we had Iowa's season and Iowa had our season.

Let's say in this scenario, we snuck in over Iowa. Reusse would write this exact same article and highlight how Iowa deserved to get in because they played a tougher schedule, had more impressive wins over Michigan State and Indiana...and even though they struggled down the stretch, ended up with better computer numbers.

That's the problem with Reusse. It's all spin, little substance.

I completely agree with you use a great example. Of course, the fact that we have to even be considering lumping ourselves in with Iowa at this point in time shows just how bad of shape the program is in. There are plenty of things to rip this Gophers team for, but they are clearly deserving of an at large bid given the criteria of the selection committee. The fact that so many in the local media seem to want the committee to make the Gophers the exception to the rule is disappointing and gives plenty of ammunition to the crazies who think the media is out to get the Gophers.

Except Reusse had predicted long ago that this would be the year that the Badgers wouldn't make the tourney, let alone keep their streak of top 4 in the converence going.

I like Reusse more than 98% of the people on this board and I loved his unvarnished, acerbic commentary on the radio yesterday. Hard to argue with anything he said yesterday or this morning in the paper. However, his column went too far. He could have made all of the same points without going the next step, which was asking the committee not to issue the invitation. (The gophers don't deserve an invite, but we would all like to see them get one anyway.)

They definitely do deserve an invite. It's about the whole year, and if you compare our resume for the year vs. some bubble teams, it is not close, despite our collapse.

And, sadly, apparently your last statement is wrong... that other poll has about 25% of the people saying they'd rather us not make it...

Being lumped in with Iowa would be a substantive step up in the world for Gopher basketball.

I usually dont have a problem with people taking some shots at a program when it is deserved. And IMO the Men's BB program deserves some heat this year. I do think this was a weak article trying to get a response. I totally agree with the take above on the Iowa program, if MN was a game or two better and had a SOS in the 50's or 60's, he would be arguing the other way...

If you don't want the Gophers to make the Tourney, for whatever selfish, deluded, or unstable reasoning you have, please stop calling yourself a Gopher fan. If you stupidly think that a one-and-done appearance somehow hurts the program, or you 'just can't take another loss', please just stop watching the games. Step back, take some time away from Gopher hoops if you need it. But don't wish ill for the players, coaches, and other staff. If they get an at-large bid on Sunday afternoon, guess what? It's because some people who likely knows much more about the national landscape of college basketball than you, decided that Minnesota's body of work is good enough to put them in the field of 64.

As far as Reusse goes, I would suggest to him that he make sure to NOT write a single column more on 2012-13 Gopher hoops season. And DON'T watch a single game more. NCAA, NIT or otherwise. I'm in complete Reusse Refusal mode these days, and so I won't read his column, as near as I can tell from the context clues here it is more of the same spiteful crap, with a complete lack of perspective.

I think it's sad, though somewhat understandable, that 25% of the fans don't want the team to get in.

We all know the numbers, going both ways. I think they are largely irrelevant. For whatever reason, the team that played in November and December no longer exists and there are absolutely no indications that it could or would return in the tournament. What we have today is the team that started it's season around January 15th and, with Nebraska's win yesterday, might be the 11th best team in the B1G. Both painful and true.

If they still get in it will be a lot of fun for at least one day. If not, an especially lost season.

The thing I like about the NCAA's is it is a new season, and you are only as good as your current game. I would be willing to wager if MN plays up to its potential and wins a game or two that a lot of the fustrations of the season will be forgotten, and the memories of the team will be mouch more in line with what they did in the tournament instead of the regular season. Personally I hope they make it and find a way to the 2nd weekend, and if they play well, they are perfectly able to do so. If they get a 11 seed, playing a #6 and #3 would not be the end of the world.

Reusse is a bater...

...gives plenty of ammunition to the crazies who think the media is out to get the Gophers...

It is simple. It is much easier and much more profitable to write a negative column than a possitive column. Reusse gets far more response form a negative column than he does from a possitive column (and that's really what it's all about).

Reusse's possitive columns tend to be about St.Johns football or Meisville baseball and he writes them about once every two months or so. He writes a negative column aimed at getting a response about twice a week.

He loves to bate us and it works every time!!!

I don't care what their seed is. At this point, I'll take anything.

Bingo. Which is exactly why it's utterly ridiculous that some don't want the Gophers to get a bid.

I would imagine that he is a 'bater. It's probably difficult to copulate with that girth.

I was fine with this sentiment in a 30 second radio rant. To write a whole column about it? Over the top, even for Reusse. But he's no worse than a good chunk of the 'fans' on this board.

I may say I don't want or think we should be in the tourney. But I will be disappointed if were not. I can't help myself I have the affliction of being a die hard Gopher fan.

It's completely over the top, even for Reusse. I'm not one to bash sportswriters - after all it's their job to point out shortcomings and reflect fan sentiment. But the level of sarcasm is completely overboard.

The players, at the heart of it, are 18-24 year old kids in college, not paid professionals. You can say you're disappointed, you can say they have more talent than what they're displaying. But the sarcastic, mocking nature of the article is really offensive.

I have always enjoyed your enthusiasm as a Gopher. This is just one hand in the game of poker. No need to go all in on every hand.

Anyone get the feeling that every article he writes is just for us here on GH?

I was listening to PA this morning and he had Justin Gaard on and I thought JG made a good point when it comes to the field of 68. The Gophers will be in the tourney for no other reason than it's such a down year in college hoops that you couldn't find 68 other teams with better resumes this year. This team is easily one of the most frustrating teams I have ever followed in my sporting fandom and also probably one of the most confounding. While I'm really down on how our season ended and absolutely feel like a change at the top should be made, I can see us just as easily win at least two games and make it to the second weekend as I could see us getting blown out in the first round.
