Reusse column on new ticket program: Seat ransom poor reward for loyalty

...and my seats for next year just keep getting better...

What exactly would Reusse know about loyalty? You know, the kind where you support your team?

I wish Reusse would have at least mentioned that many other Big Ten schools have long since implemented mandatory donations for tickets. It also would have been nice if he talked to one fan who was excited about the chance to get better seats and/or understood the need for the program and was willing to pay the price. Obviously this was a HORRIBLE time to have an awful season because the University was counting on Gopher basketball to be a hot ticket by the time this plan went in to place. This pre-conference article pretty much outlined everything:

Reason might dictate to halve the amts to $200, 115, etc... People might be more up to that...

Quite a bit of whining about a tax deductible donation that won't actually increase the cost paid by these people. And if this gets rid of some of the idiots who donate their seats to wisconsin fans, all the better.

Huh? It'll reduce my bill, but be an increase to most. It's similar to giving to the "1%" in that regard.. so I love it.

Next time the U should just randomly raise ticket prices $5-$20 per game whenever they send out season ticket renewal info and not give people advanced notices and the opportunity for tax deductions. i think there'd be less whining.

One way to get less whining would be to make some kind of guaranty. I think it was the Columbus Blue Jackets about 10 years ago who told season ticket holders they would refund some percent of their ticket prices if they missed the playoffs. If the administration really believes the team will be better next year, say "hey, this will be a tournament team next season, watching a tournament team is worth a little bit more money, and we are so sure this will be a tournament team that we will refund the increase if its not".

In typical Gopher fashion, the timing of this is incredibly poor. Always some murmuring about this in the crowd leaving the Barn this year.
