Reusse column: Gophers finally in good hands: "Kill has substance. So does his staff"

per Reusse:

Kill’s fourth recruiting class was rated from the eighth to 12th in the new 14-team Big Ten. I was more impressed, and not because hometown running back Jeff Jones was given four stars.

The stature of the players indicates a group built for development and the long haul. There’s balance, with the secondary (one scholarship) as the lone shortage. Brewster’s second recruiting class in 2008 was rated No. 17 nationally, but there was neither balance nor real substance to a group that helped him get fired three seasons later.

Kill has substance. So does his coaching staff. And I’m guessing — as an occasional cynic on Gophers football — that so does this recruiting class.

Go Gophers!!

Possible explanations:
1. Patrick has started drinking again.
2. Someone has kidnapped Reusse and there's another fat guy pretending to be him.
3. He just found out he only has a couple of months to live and is trying to make sure he gets to heaven.
4. Patrick sees Gopher Warrior's criticism of Kill, and, remembering the 2% prediction, figures anything is better than agreeing with GW.
5. Just an experiment. Reusse just wanted to see if a positive take on something Gopher-related would get him as much attention as being a d**khead. Obviously, it doesn't.
6. Patrick lost some sort of a bet and this is the equivalent of Pitino's brother having to wear a chicken costume to a game.

Well, I'll set the article as my homepage for a bit to drive up traffic.

One thing I always wanted to ask the Reusse haters: Isn't one Sid Hartman enough?

Seems to me that Reusse has just said what he thinks all along, with some snark thrown in for entertainment value. You may not like the tone when he is critical, but we clearly are in much better coaching shape than in a hell of a long time, and Reusse is able to see that. If he really hated Gopher football, I doubt he could.

It is been interesting to see Reusse's position on Jerry Kill evolve over time. Reusse used to see him as a good man who may not be up to the task. Clearly he now sees him as a good man very much up to the task.

And yes, Reusse will point out if Kill continues to have an exceptional string of bowl losses, and he will do it with snarky humor. And no, this is not the only market in the country where a sports columnist would write such a thing. And it's OK, the program will survive.

I don't believe anyone on here has ever complained about the truth regardless of who it comes from. The complaint with Pat has always been that he's a d***head. Anybody else acts like he does, they get the same response. He's not being singled out.

This is refreshing from PR. But . . .

Watch out, "Country Jer' " (remember that 'loving' moniker Fulda the Hutt only very recently hung on you?), PR may be holding a pen / mouse / or typing with his dominant hand, but beware of the stiletto that may be hiding in the other, and plunged swiftly into the ol' lattisimus dorsi when the road gets bumpy.

So, enjoy today and article.

I like Reusse. I feel like I always have to write that when I post on a Reusse-related thread. Having said that, there's no question he bashes the Gophers for bashing sake. He has said himself that no group of Minnesota fans are easier to rile up than we are, and he does it because he enjoys it. And yes, it pisses me off.

But if you wonder why he does it, look no farther than this thread. If he had criticized Kill, this thread would be four pages long by now. Plus, he finally says something nice, and he's getting the same barbs back is if he had been critical. So ... say something mean and stir up a lot of converstation while getting ripped or say something nice and stir up very little conversation and get ripped. Easy call.

+1. He's paid to have an opinion (and write about it) and yet some people think it's wrong for him to have one.

some people think it's wrong for him to have an opinion that differs from theirs.

as another poster pointed out Gopher fans are an easy mark. doesn't take a whole lot get Gopher fans riled up.

How did Pat get a glimpse of Jerry's staff?

I am as far from a fan of Mr. Reusse as you can find. It's not his "opinions" that bother me. It's how and in many cases how often he offers up his critiques. "Country Jer" Is a classic example of the snarky idiocy that loses Reusse a lot of points with me.

I hope everyone realizes when Reusse says Gopher fans he really means GHers.

Nobody has ever said it's wrong for him to have an opinion. I'm not sure why you think that's the case. My criticism of Reusse (and that of most others I've read) is in his laziness and predictability in writing about the Gophers. You would think that, as a paid scribe, he might have a little more initiative or perspective. He tends to dig deeper and try harder when he's discussing the Twins and Vikings. With the U, he long ago resigned himself to flinging snarky insults, although he'll throw 'em a bone now and then.

What about the time he decreed that Tim Brewster was going to be referred from here on out as "blackie" because he committed the unforgivable sin of dyeing his hair or something. I still can't believe an editor thought that seemed like a good idea.

Nailed it.

Just because my neighbors dog didn't **** in my front yard this morning, after crapping on my lawn every day for 6 months, doesn't mean that he's a good dog.

I think most of the Gopher football coaches have a bigger BMI than Patrick now.

So, he's predictable except when he isn't.
