There’s also a Website, athlonsports.com, which I must admit is not on my daily browsing schedule. It took a Twitter buddy – not to be confused with a Thunder buddy – to make me aware of Athlon’s attempt to rate all of the 125 head coaches in Division 1A (or FCS, if you’re a stickler for nonsensical labels).

As for Country Jer, he’s rated No. 61 overall and ninth of the current 12 in the Big Ten. He also rates behind Maryland’s Randy Edsall (No. 51) and ahead of Rutgers’ Kyle Flood (No. 74), the programs that will be in the Big Ten in 2014.

It’s hard to argue with the Big Ten’s top five: Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald, Michigan’s Brady Hoke, Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio and Penn State’s Bill O’Brien.

Why Wisconsin’s Gary Anderson comes in at No. 6 and gets more credit for his work at Utah State than Kill does for his work at Northern Illinois, that’s a subtlety lost on me. Athlon also has Nebraska’s Bo Pelini and Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz ahead of Kill, and I might take Kill over both – with Pelini flaming out in Lincoln and Ferentz worn out in Iowa City.

Go Gophers!!

FBS if you're a stickler and not an idiot.

Agreed. Wisconsin at 6 and Iowa ahead of Minnesota is questionable.

Reusse remarkably made sense in this article. He may refer to Coach Kill as Country Jer, but he hit some nails right on the head.

Thanks for link, Bleed.

Normally I won't read Fat Pat since he is such an as_s but this article was reasonable.

I don't agree that Kill should be higher compared to other B1G coaches as Pat suggests. But he should move up to #6 after next year when we win 8 games with a very tough schedule and Sconnie & IA both implode with Ferentz getting fired.

HC Jerry Kill has done very little in 2 years to deserve a spot any higher at this point. Will he this year or next? Maybe.

I keep coming back to the Michigan game last year at TCF and that horrendous fake FG attempt. That game was an embarrassment from a coaching standpoint and Kill has looked like a deer in headlights more than he's looked like he belongs at this level.

Can someone please explain the Country Jer thing? Never understood it. Thanks.

Beware the rope-a-dope. Reusse is just setting up his next columns so that if we lose to Nebraska, WI, Iowa, he can just come back with the well maybe Kill isn't better than these coaches schtick.

+1. Agree with your assessment there, Doc.

Reusse thinks Kill is just a country hick, hense the County Jer bit.

No, he actually thinks completely the opposite. He thinks that Kill uses the persona of a country hick, but is not that at all and is playing all of us by use of said persona.

The fake field goal was terrible (and horribly "executed"), but I disagree with your last point (bold).

My thought as well. Was this article some kind of back-handed compliment that I didn't get?

Normally I think Reusse is a bad journalist, but since I agree with him in this one I think he's reasonable.

Based on one play?

B1GSportsGuy doesn't like either Kill or Pitino. Never misses a chance to rip either of them. Wisconsin however will be just fine.

You know it is possible to not like the coaches of the team you do cheer for. I really liked the team I saw go play Texas Tech last year, but that's been 1 of 25 games. If we see that team in even half the games this year, I'll be very excited. If that's a 1 in 37 after this year, we will be in trouble. I love Pitino though. That was a hire outside the box that maturi would never had the ballz to do.

Huh? What the hell was Brewster? There wasn't a box within a mile when he was hired.

Agreed you do not have to like the coach of the team you cheer for. Not agreed is that there was 1 out of 25 games where the team played well and also not agreed is that Kill looks like a deer in the headlights.

During Kill's first year the team played some of the worst football I have ever seen and I have watched way too much football for many, many years. The team has kept improving however and, I agree they looked pretty good in the bowl game.

If you watch the game in question, last years Michigan game, it was apparent that
Devin Gardner was/is a superior athlete - a game changer. The Gophers had a freshman QB starting his 3ed game with a banged up O line. If the Gophers were going to win they had to roll the dice a little bit. Was a fake field goal the right play at the right time? Who, except B1GSportsGuy, knows. It is easy to second guess plays that don't work. BSG always has something negative to say.

Bleed...why must you start Reusse threads? He hates the U.

The term 'country Jer' would have stopped me in my tracks reading his article. I hate it and it is disrespectful.

It certainly doesn't have a positive feeling to it. Somebody earlier pointed out that Reusse thinks Jerry uses that persona but that he doesn't believe that is the "real" Jerry. I don't like Reusse's description either but I do have to agree with Pat that Kill is a master at presenting a certain persona. Everything he does is done for a reason and that reason is to get better. He is a very disciplined and driven man and understands what it takes to become a winner.

P.S. As a group, head coaches are high ego guys. Jerry is no different than any other head coach in that respect but he understands that he needs to suppress he ego. Therefore his "messages" are not about him but are designed to help the team become better and to implement his vision. Certainly not a rocket science concept but it does requires discipline which Jerry has.

It's better than when Reusse wrote a whole column about Brewster dying his hair and how he was now going to refer to him as 'blackie'. That combined with Brew's Reusse tweet and it was a pretty pathetic era we all lived through.
