per Reusse:

The most-favorable impression I had of Rich Pitino was that the coach was not an excuse maker. This differentiated him from Tubby Smith, who had several complaints about the hand he had been dealt during the second half of his six-year tenure with the Gophers.

Pitino embraced the old dump, Williams Arena, and his comments on a practice facility were offered as a desire – not as a blockade to winning a few more games in the Big Ten.

Young Rich probably can live with this, but I must say:

His reactions to the blowout by Wisconsin in the second round of the Big Ten tournament, and to being relegated to the NIT on Selection Sunday have caused an adjustment in my thinking on Pinto as a whiner.

Go Gophers!!

Reusse Uber Alles. The know it all once again displays the real jerk that he is. I love Reusse, because I hate love.

Doesn't Reusse realize that 95% of basketball coaches are whiners, most by their own admission? I was watching 30 for 30 "Big East" on Sunday and they spend a good couple of minutes talking about Jim Boeheim as a whiner.

Other whiners include:
Izzo
Coach K
Bo
Knight
Keady
Calhoun
Cal
Rick P.

Reusse, like the Strib is decayed remains of a century gone by. Pat is either boring or annoying so I don't seek his crap out. I give him credit for still getting paid.

I actually agree with Reusse here. Especially liked this line: "Ellis is a good dude, but for Ellis to carry the water for Pitino here, and try to make the Badgers’ conduct in the final 30 seconds an issue – rather than the Gophers’ feeble effort over the prior 39 ½ minutes – was asinine."

When we get embarrassed by a rival in a game that we had every reason to show up for, my frustration is going to be entirely centered on the boys in maroon and gold. Don't need to hear the coach complain that Bo is a mean Grinch. If Pitino thinks shooting threes with that kind of lead is inappropriate, then he should build that kind of lead against Wisconsin next season and he can tell his players not to shoot. Don't put yourself in a position to get blown out and you don't need to worry about the other team running up the score.

Has the conversation between Pitino and Bo Ryan been made public? I don't recall either party discussing it publicly. Pitino was a little pissed in the waning seconds of the game, but who can blame him? I've yet to hear him whine about it.

Can't argue with anything Reusse wrote here.

This is making a story out of nothing Pat, as others have stated, Pitino has said nothing publicly about Bo. His comments about the NCAA are tame as far as most coaches comments about a similar subject go. And if Pat cannot catch the irony in Pitino's quips about the schedule he's even a smaller literary giant than I originally thought.

And the thought that any of the above changed someone's opinion, that's pathetic.

This is classic East Side Fish Wrap, and classic UofM coverage for the Twin Cities. I'm whining about him whining about Pitino whining. Win and you don't whine i guess???

Apparently Reusse wants to go back to the days of Ozzie Cowles. That would be bland enough for him.

I'm going to throw this out there. I sense that part of Pitino's learning curve in the Big Ten is having been impressed by the power of whining. As someone else posted, everyone else does it, and it works. It gets you calls in game, and it might even get you extra Tournament consideration. As is the case in life in general, if you don't advocate for yourself, nobody else will.

Whining about calls or Tournament selection is very different from the whining Tubby did about his lot in life at Minnesota and Williams Arena. That hurt his effectiveness and the program's effectiveness on several levels.

The sun cannot set on this season w/Reusse giving the impression of having been enamored with this coach, team or program. It isn't manly in sports writing to do so.

This article actually has changed my earlier impression of Reusse.

Hmmm...No. I guess it didn't. He's still a jack-hole who probably doesn't even believe what he wrote, but needed to fill some space. So why not throw another jab at his favorite punching bag.

Reusse complains that the Twins are too quiet and not intense, then criticizes Pitino for his competitive fire. Looks like our local writer is the whiner here

-I find myself agreeing with this fella.

This^ Seriously Pat, for someone who constantly whines in nearly every article you write and uses sarcasm in almost every sentence you of all people should know a little when you hear it. Suck it Pat. We get it you don't like anything or anyone anymore.

Yeah, this is pretty standard for Reusse. Of course, he chooses to completely ignore Pitino's presser comments about how he was (a) frustrated about being behind by so much, (b) would have to solve that problem by not being behind by so much next time, and (c) completely respected Bo as a coach

Unless I'm wrong, I don't think Pitino has said a thing publicly about what happened with Bo. He was pissed and frustrated about the game, and probably should have let it go, but it's not like he went on and on about the Bo thing after the game or anything.

That's a fair comment. I do wish he would have let it go before the handshake, but you are right, he hasn't been discussing it in interviews. I probably was subconsciously attributing some of the fans' outrage on his behalf (as well as Ellis' comments) to Pitino, which certainly isn't fair.

Wow that was a simple article for really simple people. Pitino was frustrated in the heat of the moment over a shot he deemed unnecessary (the 5th 3 attempted and the 4th made by the Badgers in the last 4 minutes of a 20 point game). I don't agree at all with him making an issue of the shot, BUT he only made issue of the shot on the court and not in his press conference or any other media setting. Pitino didn't "pout", he was angered by something that went on during the game and then would not engage with the media about it afterwards. Sports are emotional, lots of things are said on the court/field that wouldn't be said in another setting. If Coach Pitino made an issue of the shot in his press conference, then maybe Patrick's claim of "pouting" would be valid.

The scheduling thing was obviously over Patrick's head. For years, the committee has touted "strength of schedule" when making their at large selections. The Gophers had both a better rpi and a significantly better strength of schedule than a few other bubble teams that got in the field. Coach Pitino was obviously tweaking the selection committee for leaving out his team ( a tradition as old as the at-large selections themselves) and not honestly suggesting that he was going to the Glen Mason school of scheduling. The Gophers are playing Louisville next year, playing in the pre-season NIT, and I assume they are also playing in the B1G/ACC challenge. The schedule will be plenty tough.

I loved Clem Haskins, but even Clem had some quotes that would make you cringe at times. I remember one year he said something like
"we're so proud to be one of the last 8 teams playing" when the Gophers were in final 4 of the NIT and the NCAA was also down to its last 4 teams. Patrick has to get over this idea that their are perfect coaches out there who are going to handle every situation exactly as he would. I wish Minnesota fans in general would stop worrying about stupid crap like "he gets us" or "he gets it", whatever "it" is, and judge coaches on whether or not they put their teams in position to compete for championships. If Patrick wanted to write an article that was critical of Pitino, talk about how his defense gave up 80 points to High Point or focus on how the team played arguably its worst game of the season in its most important game of the season against Wisconsin. Either is a valid criticism of Pitino and deserves further exploration. This article was at best petty and at worst intentionally misleading.

This is something that Fatrick should have gotten though since he does this in nearly every article he writes. He uses sarcasm and half truths all the time and when someone else does it he jumps all over them and says he is losing respect for them. What a fat pos. He hates everyone and thinks his crap doesn't stink. He could have either seen it for what it was and let it go or agree with him that our sos must not have been taken into consideration at all but instead he chose to be a dick about it.

I'll lighten up a little and let it go now mnsports1. It is just a blog.
