Reusse 1500 column: When Big Ten hoops had some laughs

Good column. Ruesse is at his best these days when writing about the past. It does make one miss Clem a bit, other stuff aside.

Good read. Jud and Clem were definitely colorful.

Someone help me here: Wasn't Jud the one(when speaking of keeping the raised floor after remodeling) that said, "It's like finally getting indoor plumbing and not hooking up the toilet."
Or something like that.

Googled it because you rang a bell.

A stool? See, over the years Heathcote has repeatedly disparaged the Gophers' Williams Arena, where team benches are set about three feet below the court. When asked a few years ago about renovations made to Williams that didn't correct that problem, Heathcote said, "Well, it's like when you have outdoor plumbing and you finally get indoor plumbing, but you don't hook up the water."

Between Clem, Jud, Gene Keady, and Bobby Knight, the sidelines were fun to watch.

When's all said and done, those will end up being called "the days." As in, those were the days.

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

We all long for the good old days, but I think right now that coaching in the Big Ten is as good as its been in awhile and as colorful.

Tom Crean, Tom Izzo, Bo Ryan, and Fran McCaffery are all nuts. Matta, Weber and Painter also have some theatrics to their game.

Those days of Bobby Knight at the Barn were great. As soon as he put one foot on the raised floor the Barn would erupt with booos. Incredibly LOUD. Loved the game we beat his team by 50.

No doubt about it, Knight is on a different level. He's iconic.

The rest of them - Clem, Keady, Heathcoat, Henson, etc - were good coaches, funny at times, etc. But, really, IMHO, no more compelling than Izzo, Ryan, Painter, Tubby, Crean, etc.

I figure we'll see a Michael Rand column in 2028 longing for the days gone by when Tom Izzo and Bo Ryan visited Williams Arena.
