Report: Steroids loom in major-college football

Very good read. Thanks for sharing that...it's the elephant in the room right? We want to see our guys get bigger and stronger, but hopefully in a way that doesn't screw them up long term.

I haven't read the story, but does the writer think we should be surprised by this? I'd say it'd be a bigger story if steroids played no part in major-college football problems.

I do believe our crew is doing it right, but there is the nagging fear in the back of my mind that there might be something - like this - that we don't know about our program. After all, we all thought Clem Haskins was running a clean program, didn't we?

It's 100% certain that a Gophers player (or players) is using some sort of illegal performance-enhancing drug, and 99.9% certain that he's doing it with zero knowledge on the part of coaches, trainers, etc. It's also 99.9% certain that he will never get caught.

FIFY

Sometimes people use roids and get worse (loss of flexibility, etc.).

This happened (I think?) to a running back we had a few years ago.

He played for the Patriots.

I would agree that it is nearly certain that at least one player on the current roster is using performance-enhancing drugs of some kind. And while I agree it is not at the instruction of the coaching staff (this applies to any coaching staff not just the Gophers) I think we are naive to think the coaches wouldn't be aware of it or at the very least have a very good idea of who is and who is not playing by the rules.

As long as the player keeps it hidden the coaches are willing to let it fly under the radar, it is just the nature of how things are now in big time athletics. They won't sanction it, they won't promote it, but they also won't go out of their way to bust a guy who is doing it behind the scenes and staying quiet about it.

I believe Mason talked about this on the Barreiro show one day and said they tried hard to keep kids off them, and sometimes it is obvious and you can stop them. I believe he said one kid refused to stop and quit the team rather than stop.
I believe the advances in steroids and testing have been significant, so I don't know if all of the old signs of use still are effective in seeing kids who are using them, and I have no idea if kids this age have access to the kinds of stuff major league baseball players used that were not detectable with testing.

Steroid use in college football (we are really talking about HGH)? Sure and it's easy to point out. Look at the pro game.

Find a well built athlete with extraordinary physical gains from the time he entered college who is always breaking down or tested positive....bob sanders...Brian Cushing ect...a certain lightly recruited walk on small college TE who became a All American and All Pro DE.

Because of the cost I don't believe there is a lot of HGH use in college football. Professional athletes have the money and the incentive to keep making that money while competing against younger faster stronger players.

Agree 100% that the cost would significantly narrow the pool of potential users because college players don't have nearly the financial means that pro players do to get their hands on illegial substances.

But it is definitely out there and like you said just look at the cases where guys make physical improvements that seem shocking. Some of it can be attributed to maturing and growing into their body but you have to assume some of these magical transformations are added by more than age and hard work. In this day and age it would be foolish not to at least acknowledge the possibility.

In my day, roids were asphalt problems.
