The Gophers and head coach P.J. Fleck have agreed to a seven-year contract extension, according to Pete Thamel. The deal includes a significant pay raise for Fleck and his staff. Fleck's annual salary increases from $3.6 million to $4.6 million and the $50,000 annual raise continues from his last contract. He is now under contract at Minnesota through the 2026 season.

"It is a tremendous honor to lead this team and represent the University of Minnesota and this great state," Fleck said in a statement. "Our family absolutely loves Minnesota, and we are excited to continue to call this state home. We are building a championship culture – one that our fans can be proud of – through the academic, athletic, social and spiritual development of our student athletes. Heather and I are so thankful to our staff, Mark Coyle, President Gabel and the Board of Regents for seeing the vision we have for our football program."

Minnesota has started 2019 with an 8-0 record for the first time since 1941. Fleck has posted a 20-13 overall record in three years as the Gophers' head coach.

When diving into the contract terms, a buyout in year one would total $10 million and drop to $4.5 million in the second season. After that, the figure is $3 million in years three and four, along with $2 million in years five through six.

Gophers' AD Mark Coyle said they wanted to "shake the trees" when they hired head coach P.J. Fleck in January of 2017. He recalled his initial meeting with Fleck where he discussed the entire vision he had for the football program.

"He laid out a very specific plan of what he was going to do at Minnesota in that very initial meeting and he has not missed any of the things he talked about," Coyle said in Tuesday's press conference.

Now, the Gophers continue to prepare for one of the team's biggest games in recent memory. The showdown against No. 5 Penn State will feature a matchup of two Big Ten teams with an 8-0 record for the first time in 40 years.
