Report: Big Ten to give Maryland $20 - $30 million subsidy for travel

Perhaps this is a reason for not having such a geographically sprawling conference. They did know Maryland was in Maryland, right?

If I'm Rutgers I'm wondering why we didn't get a travel subsidy.

That would make a damn nice seed payment for our practice facilities.

Thing is, with the internets now you can check it out on a computer. You don't have to go to the gas station and get a map.

That's got to be a hefty chunk of the 'new' BTN revenue. In which case, what was the point?

I think of Jim Delany as the type of guy who has a globe in his office.

MY to MN & MN to MY...

Brilliant station19... Needed a laugh today.

I think of Jim Delany as the type of guy who has a globe in his office.

Preferably one of those flip-top models with bottles of gin and scotch inside.

On a serious note: They were talking about with these ridiculous conference expansions, how it increased travel expenses and more importantly time away from school/classes.

Actually, as far as airplane travel time goes, it's actually shorter to go from MD to MN, rather than the other way around.

Where's our money, Jim

I'm not sure that's enough $$.
Edit: Maybe we could help out by hosting a carwash or bake sale.

I agree that if I'm Rutgers, I'm pi55ed that they aren't doing the same for them. And what about us and the folks in Lincoln? Why isn't there help on this side of B1G country? Looking on a map, there isn't any significant difference in distance between DC and Bloomington, IN or the Michigan schools than there is between Minneapolis or Lincoln and West Lafayette, the farthest distances in each division. Something smells extremely fishy about this.

It could very well have been a negotiated point by Maryland to finalize the move. If Rutgers and Nebraska didn't want that incentive, or didn't have the lawyers to think of it, that's on them. Maryland is a public university subject to open records laws, so it should be easy enough to find out if that payment was part of their agreement to leave the ACC and come to the B1G.

All of those who read the article, please raise your hand.

Travel expenses are expected to be approx. $6 million per year, and they're getting $20-30 million up front? What am I missing here?

What a crock.

What travel agency are they using?!?

wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a couple of small jets for the school

Or we could hire Concordia College Moorhead gals to wash windshields in the WalMart parking lots and steal money with that scam.

This is likely the Big 10's way of helping them with their ACC exit fee without calling it such.

So I'm guessing that the 83 million in debt comes from money paid to leave the ACC, those ridiculous looking football unis, and Brenda Frese's extravagant coaching contract.

What a crock.

It is estimated Maryland will receive approximately $32 million in their first year as a Big Ten member.

And yes, I did read the article. :D

I took that to mean their total payment from the Big Ten would be that amount. All Big Ten members have been receiving 20 something Million per year for quite awhile. I don't think it is $32 Million next year for travel expenses.

While I agree that the article doesn't disclose whether it will be paid in a lump sum, or over a period of several years, it's not likely that the $32 million includes the travel bonus. Other articles I read on the subject indicate that the payment terms of the $20-30 million haven't been revealed.

It's still a crock.

You're thinking they will get 32M before the travel bonus? Are you saying all schools will receive that much next year?

In the meantime I find it sad the Big Ten is cow-towing to an Atlantic coast team to join and yet they turned down a team in the traditional footprint(Mizz) that was begging to join.

Nebraska won't get anything close to this until 2017.

Media market exposure of perhaps 3-4 million more people in the DC-Baltimore area compared to Missouri has that affect.
