Remember when we had a coaching staff that could win the Axe?

I miss Mase.

Even when we lost in heartbreaking fashion at the end of games, at least we were in the game. We still don't appear like we belong in the Big Ten, and the Big Ten really sucks right now.

I don't miss him. I miss competence.

I dont remember those coaching staffs, Im too young, it definitely wasn't Mason's.

Well it's not like he had a full stable to work with. Our offense is crippled with too many injuries to make this happen. The defense just got broken down after a while.

You mean you miss Gutey or Holtz? The Music Man was 2-0. John was 4-2 against Wisconsin.

Did we really need this thread? The fact that you used the word STILL proves you're not realistic. If you're really that dumb I'm supprised you know how to type.

Mason was 2-8 against Wisconsin, 4-6 against Iowa, and 32-48 in the Big Ten.

Wacker won as many games against Wisconsin as Mason did, and they were against better Wisconsin teams than Mason beat. Just saying.

In the late Seventies, we hired Joe Salem and Iowa hired Hayden Fry; in the early Nineties, we hired Jim Wacker and Wisconsin hired Barry Alvarez. We have witnessed the results.

I miss Mase.

Every time I see Mase I have an almost uncontrollable urge to knock his teeth out.

He could have been so good if he had:

1. Put in the same level of effort and passion into his job as Jerry Kill.

2. Learned how to coach defense and play with a lead in the second half of football games.

3. Cared about winning championships rather than just being satisfied to beat four substandard non-conference opponents and then go to bowl games that very few people watched or paid attention to.

I am glad that some people still remember why we didn't like Mason. Especially number 3. Beating four substandard non-conference opponent and going to an unheard of Bowl game is not a good season and should not be considered a success. At this point it should be considered progress if we can pull it off, but getting there and stagnating is still not acceptable.

I miss Mase.
Kill has the same record against Wisconsin (0-2), Iowa (1-1), and (likely) Michigan (0-2) as Mason did after two years. In fact, Kill and Mason both had 3 wins their first season and Mase had 5 his second so Kill can still equal or beat Mason's second year win total (yes, I realize we play 12 games now vs 11 then). Too early to call it quits on Kill even if it's frustrating right now.

I can never forget that Michigan game - Oh the pain. When I think of Mason I think of Michigan's 4th quarter in the Dome.

I recall the BrewCrew making the same arguments. Year 3 was divergent. Time will tell where Kill can lead the team.

I pretty much agree with this. The sky is falling crew gets old. That said, I was positive towards Brew in year two and even most of year 3....no reason not to stand behind our coach. I really hope Jerry Kill can get it done, and I'm rooting for him until he definitively proves otherwise

If Kill fires Claeys and Limegrover this winter and switches his offense to the Wishbone, I'll become concerned.

switches his offense to the Wishbone

It might be better than the putrid O we have watched the past few weeks. 291 yards per game/ 13 points per game/ 9 turnovers.

I'd much rather go through the growing pains and have veteran players who have been in the same system for their entire career than switch to something that may be a short-term fix.

To the original question: I have a faint recollection of a guy named John Gutekuenst who beat the Badgers a couple of times. But that was more than 20 years ago.

Mason didn't do ANYTHING in games at Madison either! Do you realize that the last Minnesota win in Madison was 1994??

NINETEEN NINETY FOUR!

Jim Wacker is the last coach with consecutive wins vs Wisconsin (1993-4)

Huh???

MASE WAS 2-8 in 10 games vs. Wisky and never won in Madison. Five of the eight losses were by 17 points or more:

2006: Wisconsin 48, Minnesota 12 (-36)
2004: Wisconsin 38, Minnesota 14 (-24)
2002: Wisconsin 49, Minnesota 31 (-18)
2000: Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 20 (-21)
1998: Wisconsin 26, Minnesota 9 (-17)

I can never forget that Michigan game - Oh the pain. When I think of Mason I think of Michigan's 4th quarter in the Dome.

I think of Minnesota's 2 score lead against Wisc in the 4th, and knowing Mase would lose it. In fact, calling it play by play before it happened. By the time the meltdown to TT happened I was numb to it all.

Mason's teams had a nasty habit of not getting off the bus in Madison. I witnessed two such pastings and was madder than hell about it.

And Mason's vaunted rushing offense had 2nd and less than 1 prior to Justin Kucek crapping his pants in the end zone. Two tries to get one yard and they couldn't do it.

I agree. Too early to make a call either way on Kill, but next year needs to take some very clear steps forward.

What I remember most about Mase is that even with all the stuff that has been pointed out, he would always say in post-game interviews "Man, it's really hard to win here". It would have been a whole lot easier if he worked as hard as the other 10 head coaches in the B10. When people bring up "getting back to Mason levels" I consider that the minimum in a down year. We need to aspire to greater heights than that.

As an outsider, here is what I observed:

Mason - competent, but didn't have the commitment/desire to take Minnesota to the next level. Watching Glenn grin after a loss would have infuriated me if I was a Gopher fan.

Brewster - had the desire, but wasn't competent. [The fact that he was goofy as hell also made it easy to make fun of him.]

Kill - I think he is competent and committed, but wonder about his assistant coaches. His loyalty to the assistants he brought with him could hold him back. It is hard to fire someone who has been with you a long time, but isn't cutting it at the B1G level. I don't know that Jerry has it in him to be ruthless and that is sometimes required of a B1G coach.
