Wasn't he Tubby's first verbal until the staff decided he wasn't Big Ten caliber? He's transferring from New Mexico.

I believe what made Garth attractive to the Gophs at that time was that he could graduate in Dec. and thus enroll and begin play in Jan of Tubby's first year. At the time there was a question of whether Al Nolen would pass the NCAA clearinghouse and be eligible as a frosh which would have left the team extremely thin at pg. However Nathan Garth started the AAU season in May with a horrible tournament which influenced Tubby's staff to ask him to decommit. Nolen qualified and had a good first year which in hindsight makes the decision look like the right one.
