The Gophers made a nice jump in computer rankings from their dismantling of Maryland. According to TeamRankings, the Gophers project to win 6.8 games...as in most of the time they will win 2 more games.

Here's roughly what the lines would be as of today

Minnesota (PK) @ Illinois
Minnesota -4.5 @ Rutgers
Minnesota +10 vs Penn State
Minnesota +5 @ wisconsin

Interesting....I'm surprised they have the Illinois game as a pickem, considering the game is there and they seem to have our number with Bret as coach. The other games seem about right to me.

If it's a computer ranking it's not going to look at previous history. But then again maybe we shouldn't either?

Yeah, all I'm doing is taking Illinois's 5.7 rating and Minnesota's 8.5 rating, and adding the usual 2.5-3 points HFA to Illinois and calling it a pick-em.

Actual bettors may take other things into account and move the line.

More computer ratings from Massey and Sagarin with their suggested home field spreads added. Massey hates Illinois for some reason.

Honest question because I don't know. But do "experts" forecasting a game next Saturday assign some benefit to the career record of Bret vs the Gophers?

Wonder if it is relevant. Does Koi Perich, age 18, arrive next Saturday believing we can't beat Bielema?

Because Brett Beilema beat Tim Brewster 15 years ago the gophers line moves by 3 points this year

It’s science

It would be something if the Gophers could pull off the win against Illinois next Saturday. Should be favorites against Rutgers who've been falling apart. Reasonable chance that the Gophers are 7-3 and back in the Top 25 when PSU comes to town.

Penn State hosts Ohio State next weekend and after that we are the toughest game left on their schedule. Who knows what the weather will be when we host them in a month.

Bielema's past results vs Minnesota are only relevant to the extent that Minnesota's had a harder time with run-oriented teams this season and done best vs. pass-oriented teams.

This Illinois team is not a run-oriented team. It is 88th in rushing YPA, and 54th in passing YPA. It's 63rd in rushing play percentage (Minnesota is 103rd!!)

Pass protection has been a major reason Minnesota has lost to Illinois under Bielema. It was encouraging to see that do so well vs. Maryland.
