Hoke wasn't able to get in on our QB, but was able to steal Purdue's. Pump the positivity.

I understand Hoke is doing what he thinks is best for Michigan, but I think it's bush league to target recruits from Big 10 schools. I guess he shows up on the job, doesn't have many ties to BCS quality recruits, and thinks that schools like Minnesota and Purdue have some Big 10 caliber recruits he might be able to steal.

I know that it's par for the course, but I think it is bush league as well. Competing against them is fine (of course) and stealing out of their backyard is fine, but in the month (or week) before signing day to pull that crap I think it is pretty unethical. All IMO, and I understand it's not the way the game is played.

I think this goes into the same category as running up the score.

I believe he also took an offensive lineman that had previously committed to Indiana. Hoke is making quite the impression in the Big 10, he will make Richrod look like a saint and I am sure his fellow coaches in the conference will not forget it.

I don't see how it's bush league at all. Recruiting is a competition. To the poster who said it's equivalent to running up the score: NOT trying to steal a recruit would be like taking a knee on a game winning drive. You do whatever it takes to win a game on game day, right? So why not do whatever it takes to have better talent than your opponent before game day? There's a difference between showing mercy (not running up the score) and fighting to win.

Positivity Pumping!

Not too many attempts in this thread to pump any positivity...How is this a positive thing that Hoke is reclaiming a proud Michigan tradition of out-recruiting the little brothers of the Big Ten?

Anyone watching National Signing Day coverage? Me neither. That's just frustrating watching the rich get richer. Wish we could just fast-forward to September to see our new coach do what we all believe he does best!

Oh well, Go Gophers!

Because he tried to get ours first, was told no by Shortell, and settled on Purdue's. I was in a very positive mood when I heard Shortell said no thanks to Michigan.

I wouldn't say it's bush league, but it is unfortunate. You have to ask yourself, would the recruit have committed somewhere other than Michigan had Hoke been there for the entire recruiting cycle?

Agree that Hoke will be the target for payback by the opponents from whom he has poached recruits.

Have to believe it will be a one year occurrance. Kids know who the Michigan coach is now and won't commit to MN or PUR if interested in Mich.

If you want to keep your "committed" recruits, keep recruiting them until signing day, don't get lackadaisical and let another school take them.

I don't think this is the case on any of the changes. Michigan pulls weight no matter who the coach is. Carter would have committed to Michigan had Rodriguez offered him.

Aha! Yeah, I can see a positive in that! I didn't know Shortell said no to Ugly Helmet School!

I hate those ugly stripes almost as much as the oversized ugly w (lower case!)...Better Dead than Red!

Go Gophers!

How is he "stealing" them? Nothing's official until the LOI is signed. Unless he's doing something against the rules, I have no problem with it. Nobody here seemed to have a problem when Michael Carter changed his mind at the last minute and signed with us.

You must not have grown up in Minnesota because 'stealing' is a colloquialism that goes beyond the legal definition of theft. :)

If you're competing in the Big Ten, you're competing for recruits against Michigan. Your recruiting should guard against all your conference teams, no excuses.

complaining about stealing?

Were you guys who are now complaining about Hoke stealing a B10 QB as upset and self-righteous when we took Carter from WVU on signing day?

I said right upfront that I understand that Hoke is doing what he think's is best for Michigan. That isn't self-righteous.

Besides that, the two situations aren't really comparable. We had been recruiting Carter for months, while Hoke came in at the end and decided an easy way to help fill out his class was to pick off recruits from conference rivals. Now if these players had been sought by RichRod's staff, then that's different. But I don't think any of the 3 players we're talking about had Michigan offers until Hoke came on board. Just my humble opinion and like MaxyJR1 said, it's only a one year deal.

Didn't we "steal" Keanon Cooper from Michigan on signing day? No one complained then. All bets are off until they fax their LOI.

I agree. You've stated my position much more clearly than I did. My guess is Hoke had a list of guys who had some interest in Michigan at some point in the recruiting process and contacted them to see how solid their commitments were to the place they had chosen.

1) Hoke has done nothing wrong.
2) I never liked him and think he fits Michigan perfectly, a fat bully who acts like a better coach than he is.
3) He will restore Michigan to respectability, but he is not a good enough coach to allow them to dominate the other helmet programs in the conference. It will take him several years to catch Wisky.
Just my opinion.
