I don't see much wrong with the 17 Three Star recruits Minnesota seems to have recruited in 2011. If you add them to the last three recruiting classes, it doesn't look that bad.
For example, Nebraska has had twice as many Four Star recruits as Minnesota over those four classes (25 to 12) but Minnesota has had more than twice as many Three Star recruits as Nebraska (68-32). This doesn't factor in players no longer in the programs but I'd say it stacks up pretty well. Minnesota also measures up pretty favorably with Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin over the past four years and quite far ahead of Indiana, Northwestern and Purdue.
I've never said Brewster left the cupboard bare. His kids also played hard through almost every game. Finally, the character they showed at the end of last season bodes well for this year. Go Gophers.

It is an OK class. But here is the deal - The rest of the conference all have better recruits coming in. When you have to face better talent during a game, it's usually tough to win unless you have supreme coaching. The gophers have struggled for 2 reasons the last 50 years. Bad coaching and not enough talent.

Also, you can't judge all the recruits based on their star level. Look at the school that they were offered by and you will get a better idea of the talent that they have.

But compared to Mason's last four years?

I don't disagree that other factors have to be taken into account. But if you compare Gopher recruiting from 2008 through 2011 versus what Mason achieved from 2003 through 2006 (forget 2007), things have improved a good deal for Minnesota, have they not?
Also, this has to be the best collection of talent with which Jerry Kill and his staff has ever had to work. If he's not a better teaching coach than Mason, there's not that much hope for his tenure.

You start a lot of threads.

Is starting posts a problem here?

My last seven post have averaged over 940 viewers and 20 responses each. Isn't that the purpose of a board like this? If people don't like my posts, they certainly don't have to read them.

Keep the posts coming. They are quality.

Its good to start posts. As long as they are positive...:)

If you judge talent by using recruiting services ratings system, than yes it has. HOWEVER, we traded an above average coach for a very sub par coach who was not able to do anything with said talent and possibly may have ruined that talent beyond repair from a technical stand point. A lot of these guys are going to be seniors and juniors this year (who were highly rated), and there have been so many system changes throughout the years I wonder if Kill will be able to revert them to something more effective before it is too late. We shall see. I for one think he is more well rounded than mason as a coach so I have hope.

KEEP 'EM COMING LIG.

Keep those posts and new threads coming, my friend. Your posts are always interesting, positive, well-thought-out, and literate, but never incendiary, qualities oftentimes lacking on this forum. Keep up the good work, and keep those words flowing.

GO GOPHERS!

JackiO (a Four Star poster here) makes some very good points. My hope is that the poor kids at Minnesota have been through so much in terms of system changes that they'll adapt to Kill's system readily.
They've already run the spread, pro-sets and a power running game. Kill's system is multi-set, so I hope that's a plus.
On defense I may be a Pollyanna, but I do think Brewster did his best job there after the first year and 2010 was a rebuilding year. Brewster put more of his best players on defense and Kill can benefit a great deal from that fact. Finally, Jeff Horton was a saint to keep as many young players red shirted as possible last year.

I enjoy LonelyIowaGopher's posts as they are well thought out and informative. Keep them coming. A lot different than some of the posters who post for no reason other to post....they have absolutely nothing to post. I get tired of wading through some of stupid stuff on here......

Killjoy,

I'm thinking about starting a new thread tomorrow: How many total games and Big 10 games will Jerry Kill win in 2011--not that it matters, of course! Do you think that would be okay?

I don't think it is just about recruiting. Brew did a really good job in that area as an elite salesman. I think it is about getting kids that can actually qualify and will wind up sticking around for 3 to 5 years to really build the program. I believe that is where Kill will excel.

I am not very familiar with other programs. It just seems as if we have had a tremendous amount of non-qualifiers and kids that left early.
