eh- I have to agree that this is a sneaky good recruiting class- much better than imagined. Armelin is a stud and wants the ball. Hollins smooth and athletic. Walker is ready to play. Nice group.

DJ= Devoe Joseph. pretty jumper, creates better than westy imo, and more within the system

I'll give a fuller report later (I'm tired). I was impressed. Trevor and Devoe looked great. Armelin looked good. Hollins could contribute. The upperclassmen were who we thought they were. Elliot and Maverick don't look ready to contribute this year.

As far as I'm concerned Mbakwe and Devoe are two of the best players in the country. I put the gophers #4 in the Big Ten to start the year, but after seeing the squad tonight, I think they can contend for a Big Ten Title.

I am as big a fan as the next guy...but one twenty minute intrasquad scrimmage and you're ready to completely alter your outlook on the season and say we can contend for a B10 title? And Mbakwe and Devoe are two of the best players in the country? Possibly the homer of the year post right there.

Hate to break the news to you, but Mbakwe got pre-season player of the year mention and Devoe is down right sick. Maybe i over extended a tad with best players in the country, but they are damn good college players. Plus, after a year of horrible college football, I want to be excited about something.

The season is just starting, if there wasn't optimism (whether it's a little over the top or not) then something would be wrong. This is looking to be like a very good season though and hopefully one with less headaches. I'm ready for a consistently top 25 team who finishes top 4 in the conference and wins at least a couple games in the tournament.

students at the U suck. seriously, the frat houses were empty, hockey game was over, dinky town was quiet, and student section was a 4th full, wtf? the best high profile varsity team we have and no one supports it? is it just that minnesotans dont like basketball? cause indiana down right blows and they have stands filled with fans cheering on a dunk contest that was between a white guy dunking the ball two handed and another guy dunking the ball between his legs? we suck as fans. Trevor freaking risked his life to entertain us and nothing. devoe can do a between the legs dunk ive seen it.

Good reports. There's nothing wrong with optimism. Just remember that fans of the other 10 schools are on their message boards today saying the same things...

+1

I think it's a real early to crown Chip "the real deal." Frankly, I wasn't that impressed.

He definitely can't create his shot as well as Westbrook. He's much better at shooting off screens, but he can't exactly beat anyone off the dribble in the BT. Nothing against Devoe, that's just not the type of player he is. He was sick last night though. My only knock on an aspect of his game that he can easily change is that I would like to see him not slow the ball down so often. He sometimes kills the offense when he just stands there with the ball or dribbles around aimlessly.

I didn't see it so I don't know. But Gopher AD website had score as 35-30 with Armelin scoring 6 for his team.

Clipped:

With the competition over, the team moved onto the maroon and gold scrimmage. The Gold team was comprised of Al Nolen, Colton Iverson, Sampson, Dominique Dawson, Hoffarber, Chris Halvorsen and Armelin. The Maroon squad featured Maurice Walker, Elliott Eliason, Joseph, Mbakwe, Hollins, Osenieks and Ahanmisi.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair, with maroon earning a 35-30 victory over gold in the 20 minute scrimmage. Joseph led all scorers with 12 points, while Mbakwe added 10 points and five rebounds for the victorious squad. Armelin was impressive for the gold team with six points, matched by Hoffarber and Iverson who also had six.

The "Official Roster" hasn't made the change to #34 for Devoe yet and it took a while to identify who #5 = Armelin , #25 = Halvorsen and #? = Eric Stark were. How does that info get updated?

Armelin

I liked Armelin as well although I would not label him a Stud; at least not yet. He doesn't have any range on his jump shot, in fact, he does not have a jump shot. Hollins showed some things as well, however, except for his speed on the break, he showed nothing in the half court. For us old timers, Armelin reminds me of James Jackson in the 70's and maybe a little of Terrence Simmons. He may eventually be a stud, but he has to develop a jump shot to get there.:cool02:

Lets hope Joseph is more consistant than Westbrook. He is not as athletic as some of the guards in the Big Ten but he is a great shooter and has basketball skills equal to anyone.

It is really to bad Nolen isn't a little better offensively. He is so much quicker than anyone else on the Gophers.

Either you don't know why that is, or you do and that was a very tasteless joke.

Of course it's too early to call him the real deal, but I was impressed. Maybe it depends on your expectations going in. I wasn't expecting much, so was pleasantly surprised. I don't know how much of an immediate contribution he will have, but I liked his aggressive mentality. He shows flashes, and I'm excited to see what Tubby and staff can do with him. I saw potential, much more than I thought I would.

I watched the scrimmage on the BTN website...I didn't think Chip's shot looked as broke as everyone seems to think it is, but then again I did not see the 3 point shooting contest. Chip looks like a slasher, someone who can go hard to the hole and either finish or go to the line (or both). We haven't had many like that recently.

Hollins looks great. Silky smooth all the way around, with some impressive speed. I'm not expecting a ton from him this year but I can see him developing into one of the best players on the team eventually.

Mbakwe was impressive. There was one move where he caught the ball 10 ft from the basket, turned and faced, then made a power move to the left with a nice first step on a bigger man. He got fouled on his shot and went to the line, I can't wait to see more of that. He also could be an absolute beast on the offensive glass, hopefully he can be a guy who can get some big boards and put backs on second chance opportunities. Those are huge in college basketball.

Maverick, I couldn't tell. Tubby must have really hated Cobbs if he let him go like that. We could use Cobbs this year.

Blake, man what a sweet stroke. Sadly this is his last year (tear).

Overall, that scrimmage was sloppy as hell but it was exciting to see the boys back at it. Bring on the freaking season already.
