Tubby was on with Grimm and Zulgad tonight for his weekly radio show on 1500. These quotes are not verbatim, but close. I omitted some areas that don't add much to our current discussion or didn't make sense to transcribe, but do make sense when listening on the radio:

Tubby on Iowa game...We were so high and so excited about our win against Wisconsin. I guess we never recovered from it. We tell our players never get too high or too low. That's something that we try to tell our guys. You have to keep that balance in life and in sports especially. You can't live in the past, you have to move on. Friday was a real tough practice, trying to get them grounded. Valentine's Day is over. We got a good win. We had good practices, it wasn't as good as I hoped for Friday but we had a good no contact practice on Saturday. We got off, we were ready, prepared, but you know things change. Foul trouble with Andre Hollins, Rodney Williams only played 10 minutes, his shoulder is still bothering him again. Rodney is a pretty important part of our program. Those are no excuses, those are things that happen. Elliot Eliason is playing the best basketball of his career. He'll probably start for us against Ohio State. Rodney is still favoring the shoulder. We have to over-achieve every time we go out to play. I try to tell our guys we can't hope and wish, we have to make it happen. You have to work at it. I always enjoy coaching and I enjoy it now. This is biggest comeback I think I've ever had coaching. It was a tough thing to handle. We went twice today. We had a good practice. We went at 6am this morning and again this afternoon.

Tubby on dealing with the zone...If you don't have shooting. They are packing it back and we're missing shots. We missed free throws. We missed about four free throws. Then you turn the ball over 17 times, 10 at halftime. Right during that stretch, it wasn't so much the zone as it was the pressure. We just panicked. There were a couple of calls that were unbelievable. Those types of things when things are going bad that's what happened. We had a very poorly called game during that stretch. I was very disappointed. Those things happen, but that can turn a game. It was 21-5 and a kid hits a three at the buzzer and you could sense, you know we got in foul trouble. I was hoping guys like Oto could make some shots for us, he got some good looks. All this is happening at the course of the event. Those things happen. We look back on it and say hey, what do you have to do. I say all the time with Joe at the 3 spot, we have to overachieve. He's guarding bigger guys. We have to get bigger. We've talked about making changes to make sure we get bigger but I'm not sure it's our best lineup.

Tubby on whether things can be done in the game to change things up...
I called two timeouts to try to slow it down. Be patient with the ball, but by this time the momentum had shifted. The crowd was in it, every one feels the pinch, the officials too. We had good minutes, good play from guys.

Tubby on what he'd like to see happen against the zone....We got second shots, we got the ball inside. Trevor got fouled. Elliot got fouled. Oto had wide open shots on the baseline. When its not going down on the road it can go South in a hurry. It's like the Northwestern game.

Tubby on the play of some of the guys...Elliot is playing unbelievable. A guy like Joe, you know you go around the league and people start to know what you can and can't do. You have to work on your weaknesses.

Tubby on his dance post UW game...It was spontaneous. All the sudden the music started playing and I went at it. I have a few moves. I have a few moves. I didn't even know what the music was. I don't know where it came from. I guess some other teams have done it. Whatever hits the social networks everyone starts to do it.

Tubby on UW game...We did some good things in that game against Wisconsin. We took care of the ball better than we did yesterday. We took care of the ball, and executed. When the clock was winding down, Joe Coleman took the ball to the basket and we just talked about it. It took a lot of guts to hit those free throws. Andre Hollins also made some big plays. Both sophomores came up big and the best thing is they'll be back next year.

Tubby on Gophers D against UW...You want to limit teams to one shot, but I say that and they had 18 offensive rebounds. They are a very patient team.

Tubby on going from high of UW win to Iowa loss...It's devastating. Especially the way it happened. All the sudden we're up and we're going to be OK and we're playing well. The guys got the message, then we do some things, make some careless mistakes, some fouls. Fouling will take you out of a lot games. Or a turnover. It gives an opposing incentive, inspiration. That's what happened. Even with substitution pattern we had guys playing well. It's pretty tough. I have to be honest with you. We went through those four loses in a row. I felt going into the Iowa game we had a great scouting report. We've gotten off to good starts for the most part all year which is something different than the past. But you know the zone, again. But when your center has the most assists, Elliot had 4 assists. Oto had 3 and Elliot had 4. We just didn't share the basketball as well as we should have.

Tubby on Rodney...
I'm not sure about if Rodney will play or not. I think he will. He didn't practice today as he has a class at 3, but he was here this morning. We'll talk tomorrow. We'll do film. We'll look at film of Ohio State. So today was a busy day for us. Rodney had treatment, but he had class at 3. As a senior he has class he has to take, both he and Andre Ingram.

Tubby on Buckeyes...They have the leading scorer in Thomas. He's taken more than 200 shots than anyone on the team. Not only him, but they have an Aaron Craft. They probably feel like they haven't played as well as they'd like this year. We've got our work cut out for us.

Tubby on his approach with the team after a tough loss...
We've hugged them all year long. Enough hugging. All this kumbaya stuff. This time of year we go back to morning practices to work on fundamentals. We're approaching it like we have a month and a half of basketball left. We need to get healthy, sharpen up our skills. We'd like to be playing better than we did Sunday. We need to pick up the intensity level. Post-season play intensity level will pick up. This time of year everyone has a sense of urgency and that's now we approach it.

Tubby on Gophers NCAA Tourney resume...we need to be at .500 at least. We're already at 6-7 and we have to come up with 3 wins. For us especially we have to find a way to do that (3 wins). I think we can, I know we can, but we can't do it the way we did it yesterday.

Go Gophers!!

Agree with most everything he said, but it is his job to fix the problems he's identified. Lets see what he and the team have got the rest of the way! Anyone can win any night, why not us?

My thoughts exactly. He expressed some good insights, including the times the Gophers did solve the zone but didn't execute the score. He talks about how he hopes Oto can make that shot, and it's not a reach to extrapolate that he hopes he can recruit a better player next time.

I like what Tubby had to say - he gets it. His players just need to listen. Stop the damn fouling!

Tubby does a nice job of diplomatically saying Coleman and Williams are limited players. Neither has stepped up their game and because neither can hit outside shots a zone defense is a death sentence. If the opposing coaches of the remaining games do not play zone they are fools.

Agree with what you posted. I seem to remember reading one of the forums about Tubby chewing Dre a new a hole about driving and turning the ball over. I don't like turnovers,I wonder if Tubby has been over critical of the players, and they are afraid of making mistakes? I read about Coleman not taking an open shot when open. Others hesitating we are an athletic team and need to run.

Agree with you.

I liked reading what Tubby had to say. The only thing that concerned me about it was when he said that he called timeouts to get us to slow down.

I don't want us to slow down. I think we play much better when we speed up.

+1 I look for them to spring it on us at a crucial point in the game. Probably after halftime.

Also, it is hard to run a zone defense against a fast break team. They don't have time set up. As long as they take care of the ball it should work.

Interesting that Tubby mentioned "overachieving" which there hasn't been much of the past 2 2/3 seasons. I also find it interesting that he was critical of the officials in the game (which I agree with). I wonder if he ever considered getting a technical? Obviously, the momentum was already in the wrong direction, but I think it might mean something to the player to see him fight for them on the court with as tough as he is RUMORED to be on them on the practice floor.

I am disappointed that he's now targeting 9-9 in the conference, but I guess that's kind of what you have to say at this point.

I didn't want to pour water on the celebration over the win over the Badgers, but it's not like the Gophers played a crisp game to get that done. All of the same problems that have been prevalent for much of the 6 games prior to Wisconsin occurred in that game as well, except for the turnovers. I'd be disappointed if the coaches came out of the game thinking the team played "well" as opposed to grinding out a touch victory.

Joe/Oto: Yes, Joe has to work on his weaknesses (which appear to be all the same things he was weak at last year), but the coach also has to do his part to emphasize his strengths. It's great that Oto got open shots, but he hasn't been close to knocking down a shot all year...there might be a reason (besides play diagram) as to why he was open.

Would have like to have heard Tubby's take on keeping Andre Hollins out with 2 fouls. The team is in such a tough spot, especially against pressure, if Maverick is the lead ball handler.

It's interesting you mention getting a T. last night ND was down 21-3 and Brey got a technical. From that moment on the officiating changed and ND went on a big run and won the game by 9.

This is where not having a true point guard hurts you big time. I also agree we are far better when we run then when we try to play slow but without that true ball handler it can be tough to avoid getting reckless. Real disappointment has been the bench but specifically the guards because the team seems to grind to a halt when Andre Hollins is not out there and he isn't a true point guard in his own right.

Was this as he put it, his best shooting team? Or maybe that was last years sharpshooters. He recruits guys who can't dribble or shot and then coaches them down.

If you look at our overall record, at home we are 13-2 (5-2), and on the road we are 3-5 (1-5). On a neutral court, our record is 2-1, our loss being to Duke. Obviously, away games is where we have struggled. I think if we can get into the NCAA tourney, we can go on a serious run, with every game being on a neutral court. Yes, it is an issue that we have struggled on the road, but I have yet to see a team that I believe can beat us on a neutral court, with the exception of Michigan.

The point guard deficiency is frustrating. Tubby is an experienced coach yet he has not signed a true PG in the past 2 years. You can live with Andre at PG but he has to see that Mav is a liability and there is no guarantee he gets Jones. There are a number of unsigned PGs still available that are good bets to be better than Mav. Get on the phone and convince one that he can play here. My guess is that one of these would jump at the chance to play in the B1g as opposed to Dayton or New Mexico St.

I appreciate what Tubby had to say. However, Tubby brought in the players on the team today. He did not bring in a B1G point guard. He brought in players like Mav and Oto who obscure D1 prospects at best. He has a weak bench because of the players he signed. He has had chaos on his roster at times with players leaving and in a funk. Tubby and his staff coach up the players they signed. They motivate them.

Tubby won a national championship, yet he has never had a winning record in the B1G. He has coached D1 basketball at a high level for decades, yet he struggles to put a legit B1G roster together. Tubby is paid $2Mil a year to handle these issues, not identify them in a radio interview. It is the doing, not the talking.
