Spencer was on with Dubay and Joe Schmit this morning on 1500. Here is a recap of his interview. This is not verbatim, but close:

Spencer on Gophers inability to get the ball in bounds...
That was probably the key to the game. If they can just in bounds the ball and get a good look at it. The worse that can happen is you go to overtime. I wasn't in the huddle so I don't know what they drew up. They had three tries at it and its disappointing they couldn't get it in bounds. Unfortunately they were unable to do that. I think its easier to get the ball in bounds from the side I feel like you have more room. Like I said, they weren't running a play to score something right from the in bounds pass. All they had to do is get the ball in play and then they can make a play on it. I thought they would get the ball to Andre Hollins and let him penetrate or dish or finish himself. It's interesting because you will see teams go to a pick and roll, but Illinois did a good job stooping that. The game was there for the taking, but it was unfortunate in the end.

Spencer on Tubby benching Trevor and Austin with two fouls...It was interesting to hear that he had second guessed himself just because that is one of the rules he has. Whether its right or wrong it's his way and he's not the type that goes away from that. In a tournament setting you get the feel that maybe some of those guys should be in there. If one of those guys plays 8 minutes and gets a third foul, at least you get those 8 minutes out of them. Trevor finished with three fouls and Austin finished with 2 fouls. Coaches are so embedded into their philosophies, Jim Boeheim has never played man to man defense. That's kind of what I got from Tubby yesterday.

Spencer on what changed from 15-1 to being 20-12...I think its interesting. I think that's the magic question. They aren't playing as loose as they were when they were 15-1. I think teams figured them out a bit. In the Big Ten coaches watch film of every minute of every game. You figure guys out. If you force Rodney and Coleman into jump shooters. The pace of play and how they are playing, they are passing up open shots. Yesterday Maverick passed up an open three with 25 seconds on the shot clock and for what reason I don't know. To me, he looked open and he passed it up and they passed it on the perimeter for 20 more seconds and we had a shot clock violation. Offensively you will struggle to win games when you score 49 points. We are the best offensive rebounding team in the Big Ten, so if you get an open look take it.

Spencer on Andre Hollins...The tournament is always guard oriented. The teams that make deep runs in the tournament have good guard play. I'd like to see the Gophers lose or win with Andre Hollins. He can take over a game offensively. When he's feeling it he can get others involved. I think they have to ride him for the NCAA Tournament.

Spencer on NCAA Tournament match ups...I'm hoping they get a higher seed now as you want to avoid that 8/9 seed game. They've proven they can play with anybody. That first game is going to be a game where Minnesota could be favored. I wouldn't be surprised if they were a favorite in that game.

Spencer on the Gophers chances in the Tournament...With this team you don't really know. If you told me yesterday we'd win by 20 I wouldn't be surprised or we'd lose by 20 I wouldn't be surprised. There is a part of me that this team could upset a 1, 2 or 3 seed. When they are playing really well, if they play like they did against Indiana they can make a run. Or if they play like they did yesterday or against Nebraska or Purdue it could be a quick trip.

Go Gophers!!
