Recap of Pitino's interivew on 1500...talked recruiting, player development & more
Pitino was on with Spencer and Grimm. These notes are not verbatim, but close:
Pitino on being at the U…I’m extremely excited about this opportunity, the potential of this place. Williams Arena is one of the best venues in college basketball.
Pitino on what the U has to offer…We have got enough to build a championship program. We have one of the best arenas to build a championship team. We have a great conference, a fantastic degree for students. We’ll focus on what we have and not what we don’t have.
Pitino on having similar mannerisms to his Dad…I have been lucky enough that he’s involved me in a lot of it. I would go to school and go to the gym right after. I’m really lucky to have been around him. He’s one of the best coaches to ever coach the game. I embrace it, I don’t try to hide it. I am very lucky to be his Son. He’s had an unbelievable career.
Pitino on his age…I am young, but I’m not inexperienced. I’ve had unbelievable experiences throughout my life. I embrace it. I don’t try to act like my Dad or Billy Donovan.
Pitino on his style of play…Our style is to create offense through our defense. I want to recruit speed, athleticism, three point shooters. We’ll work very hard on conditioning, in the weight room. In order to set up your press you have to score.
Pitino on the first meeting with the team…It was good. It was probably 10-15 minutes. I talked about my vision of this place, my style. They are familiar as they played Florida, they can watch Louisville. They seemed very excited about it.
Pitino on player development…Player development is extremely important. I’ll certainly take what I’ve learned from my Father, from Billy Donovan. We’ll hold these guys accountable. You have to have highly motivated kids and if you do you will
Pitino on The Barn…Blown away by it. I’ve watched many games on TV. So historic. So much tradition. It’s a special, special place.
Pitino on spending time in Minnesota…I haven’t spent much time up here. I came up here a couple of times when my Dad was coaching the Celtics. This city is beautiful. We drove through downtown. So much life and passion for the University of Minnesota in this state.
Pitino on recruiting…The biggest thing I was at two great programs. You have to have something to sell in recruiting. It takes time, it takes hard work. When you have something great to sell you can’t hide it. I am so eager to get kids to come here and see our facilities, see our University.
Go Gophers!!
