A lot has been made of the quarterback's performance yesterday, but in my opinion QB play was not the main reason we lost yesterday. I think our QB play was one of the better aspects of the game yesterday. My personal ranking of how the different groups played yesterday...

  1. [*]Punting - Orseske did well and is putting last year behind him.
  2. QB play - Gray did OK. People seem to ignore his 110 yards rushing (6.5 ypc). He looked uncomfortable out there in the passing game, but he completed 50% of his throws which included a few easy drops made by the receivers. Shortell also performed OK, and was plagued by two drops on easy catches by receivers. He also did not look as comfortable out there as he did against USC.
  3. LB play - They played below OK. They got decent pressure on the QB when they blitzed, but they need to come up with some sacks. They tackled alright, but did not play as well as they did at USC. They, along with D-line, allowed a team that rushed for 6 yards to rush for 133 yards against us.
  4. FG (and PAT) play - Also below OK. All the PAT's were good, so we've got that going for us. The missed field goal was about 40 yards I think, so it's one that should be made >80% of the time. It was just wide left and was close, but the bottom line is that 3 points were not put on the board. I think Hawthorne will get the field goals together over the next few weeks, but he did a good job on decent job on kickoffs yesterday.
  5. WR play - They played poor. They dropped too many passes that would have given us first downs and put us 10 or more yards closer to the endzone. McKnight's catch was a thing of beauty though and he did have a good statline (9 catches, 146 yards, 1 TD) for what it's worth which isn't much.
  6. RB play - They played poor. The O-line didn't give them much to work with, but they need to be able to gain 1 yard when given the opportunity. I was disappointed in Edwards especially, but none of the RB's did anything to be happy with. On the other hand though, I think they RB's should have been given more carries to get it together. They were only given 16 carries total and one of them was the botched snap by Shortell that the announcers thought was meant to be a pass.
  7. DL play - They played bad. They did a poor job of stopping a running game that only gained 6 yards last week against Ohio. Plain and simple, they need to get better penetration and get in the backfield.
  8. OL play - They played bad. They were bigger than NMSU's D-line that gave up 241 yards to Ohio, but they could not take advantage of it in any way. They could not create a gap to save their lives. We NEED to be able to gain 1 yard on 4th down against NMSU. But we couldn't. Twice.
  9. DB play - They played bad. They need to get better. They allowed an NMSU passing attack to complete 12 receptions in a row, and they also did not tackle very well. The highlight of the DB play was Vereen's interception. In my opinion, he played the best of the DB's despite the fact he is the least touted of them. The other interception was the result of NMSU underthrowing a deep pass into triple coverage, so I'm not going to give the DB's too much credit for that. They need to get more pressure on the receivers and make plays.
The refs almost played as bad a game as us too. The QB's are the most scrutinized, but they are only a small reason this team lost against NMSU. Our main problem is on the other side of the ball.

Agree? Disagree? I don't care.

Here we go with the refs again. Never fails.

The PI call on Royston was very iffy but they got the call back when McKnight literally fell down untouched in the endzone.

If you can't move the ball 2 feet against NMSU you don't deserve to win.

I honestly didn't even think the Royston PI call was "iffy". Extremely tough call/timing against us but he pretty clearly bumped him off the route before the ball came in.

Also agree that we need to convert 3rd and one/4th and one to win games

It is pretty simple. We got overmatched on the defensive and offensive lines by a bad football program.Talk QB even d backs but when you can't run the ball, stop the run or more important rush the passer. No sacks again. Can we not find one guy who can get to the quarterback? Are our defensive linemen that bad of athletes? They must be.
