Ranking College Football Recruiting Departments (#4. Minnesota Gophers)

The top 3 are dinks...………..

Seriously, though. It took a few years to become obvious, but this staff is doing an amazing job at making Minnesota a legitimate top line football program.

Wow...I would not have believed this a few months back.

PJ Fleck is tailor made for Gopher Football.

He is the transformative once in a lifetime hire.

He is dispelling all the excuses about Minnesota being a tough place to recruit from.

I think he knows he can build a dynasty in MN without all the pressures of a traditional blue blood program.

Let's enjoy the ride of our lifetime. I hope the U administration and boosters do all they can to keep him here.

Nick Saban has consistently landed top recruiting classes filled with 5- star talent for more than a decade and Alabama doesn’t even crack the list? C’mon man!

I said it before Fleck came. What is not to sell about Minnesota? This is a great school, with a great state around it. This is a destination for all the right reasons. Fleck can see it. He can sell it. The guy is a true leader, and a rather funny guy down deep.

Who are these guys that are handing out these rankings? we haven't come close to sniffing the top ten in recruiting in 50 years and they are saying we have the #4 staff in the nation? Are they saying we are the 130th hardest school to recruit to? and our awesome staff is the only reason we get into the 30s and 40s?

Seems to me to be kind of a back handed compliment without a sweet recruiting class ranking or two to go with it. But maybe this is the year! We have 3, that's right! 3! 4 STAR recruits all ready!! Which is more than we have had total in most years around here!!! Imagine if we got to 10 four star recruits! That would be something. Meanwhile in Alabama, they will still get ten 5 star recruits easy.

I think what it's saying is how truly hard it is to recruit when you've sucked for 50 years. Big progress happening - doing all the right things, 100% in on recruits and their parents, non-stop energy, using technology and social media, etc. Not sure how much of that Saban has to do these days. He was good but didn't win national titles at Sparty, only when he got down to historically great programs in the heart of football and talent nirvana (LSU & Bama).

We definitely feel like the outsider in this group with a lot of traditional powers in talent rich areas. Would be interesting to know how they make their determinations but it is clear that what Fleck is doing is being noticed. Recruiting a highly rated class to Minnesota is not easy to do with the local talent base available. So when high rated guys from around the country are committing without even setting foot on campus it says something about what the staff is doing.

Can you imagine what UNC could get away with now. They know they can do anything right now because NCAA has no power over them (can't imagine what they are doing to get this class). Covid-19 will give them lots of wiggle room as well. What a contrast of styles between UNC and U of Minnesota. UNC - come be excellent where we are going to treat sports as life. U of Minnesota - come be excellent where life is more than sports.

To be honest until the last 10 years the campus had a really dumpy feel to it.

Washington Ave traffic being reduced by the light rail has low key Made the campus a lot more walkable and serene. And they’ve done a great job of making the campus feel like a campus instead of a few buildings in a run down part of town.
The gentrification of northeast raising property values has also made some of the off campus housing areas slowly become less dumpy as well.

Agree. North Carolina's football record the last 3 years has been 7-6, 2-9, and 3-9. I guess the next time NC plays Bama or LSU, they will be heavy favorites, due to their #1 recruiting department.

This is way off topic, but I wish the Fraternity Row homes were a little more kept-up. At times they look dumpy. If you drive by other campuses, their Fraternity Row homes look like a scene from a disney movie. With beautiful landscaping etc. Iowa State for example. Just my opinion.

That’s true from some standpoint but it is a way better looking campus than it was a decade ago

Most, if not all, of the houses in fraternity row are designated as historic sites, so they can’t make any substantive changes to their appearances—and even maintenance is really expensive. I have no idea if it’s like that for many other campuses, though.
