The argument over Matta Vs. Izzo in a different thread got me thinking ...

let's rank the top 5 coaches in the Big10.

I am not going to give a ranking criteria. But just curious what ends up being general consensus.

I'll start it off.

1) Tom Izzo
2) Tubby Smith (I am a homer to some extent ...)
3) Thad Matta
4) Matt Painter
5) Bo Ryan

Here's how they rank (strictly in terms of NCAA tourney games for their entire career).

If I got to choose the Gopher coach from the existing Big Ten Coaches...

Smith
Rarely does a Gopher fan get his first choice in coaches. In Tubby I have mine.
Izzo
Clearly the best of the rest.
Crean
The next Big Thing in the Big Ten
Painter
His teams are always in the mix
Matta
He may not be the most ethical but he does produce winners
Weber
A poor mans Thad Matta
Ryan
The Glen Mason of Big Ten basketball. Besides it's soooo boring.
Carmody
Does more with less. His teams always give their best.
McCaffery
Unknown quantity but better than the last two.
Beilein
The best of the rest part 2. Unfortunately Ed is the only one left.
DeChellis
Nice guy. That's is only the good thing I can say about him.

Top 5

This is a tough call, but if I can only go with 5:

1. Izzo (can't argue with 6 FF's, 1 runner-up, 1 title)
2. Ryan (makes the NCAA every freaking year at a major program not named Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina or UCLA)
3. Smith (proven winner at 4 different schools; can move ahead of Bo if Gophers become a factor in NCAA)
4. Matta (also won at Butler & Xavier, gets loads of talent every year @ OSU)
5. Painter (will need to prove he's here to stay after Hummel/Johnson/Moore era ends after next season)

***I'd have no problem with any of these guys calling the shots for the Gophers, and I'd have Beilein #6. His teams are never fun to play, which tells me he's a good coach.

1. Izzo -is building or has built a "program" beyond the Big 10
2. Bo Ryan-- does more with less, teams get better as the year progresses, kids get better each year
3. Matta --better recruiter than coach, but recruiting is part of the job
4. Smith- great track record, I might watch too many games so I might question stuff more than other teams I don't see as often
5. Crean- slow Big 10 start, but watch out in the future

coaches

1. izzo
2. ryan
3. thad
4. tubby
5. painter
6. crean

1. Izzo
2. Ryan
3. Painter
4. Matta
5. Smith (tie) *
5. Weber (tie) *

*tie because coaching decisions always seem to factor into games that their teams should have won/closed out (the "choke" factor). Happens with Ryan, Matta and Painter less often and hardly ever with Izzo.

Also agree that Ryan "coaches up" his teams and Matta/OSU is the "freak" of BT recruiting. Painter and Izzo seem to have the best mentor relationships with their players (a major key to the success of both programs--could also place Ryan in this category despite "The Grinch" image).

1. Izzo
2. Tubby
3. Painter
4. Bo
5. Crean
6. Carmody
7. Weber
8. Beilein
9. Matta-guy's a sleazeball IMO and the league is filled with good coaches. He might be the #1 recruiter but I wouldn't want him coaching my team.
10. DeChellis
Unranked-McCaffery. Too early to say anything about him.

Coaches

1. Izzo- not even close
2. Tubby- see his ring
3. Ryan- coin flip with him and Tubby
4. Matta- He gets talent and they play together
5. Carmody- his system works could be a big year for the Cats.

2. Tubby
3. Painter

5. Crean

This is the one that I agree with the most. The only one that I would change is the # 1 coach. I think it is a tie between Tubby and Izzo. They both get the most out of their players. During the last few years that Izzo has been doing well, Tubby has not. They are two identical coaches. I have said this before, Tubby needs one winning season here at MN. Once that happens, he will out-coach anybody in Big10. MSU players buy the system. Players at UK during the last 2 years of Tubby and in MN never learned the system. They keep playing to avoid losing. YOU HAVE TO PLAY TO WIN. Until then, we will lose to the average teams. Last Monday's game was identical to many of the games that I have watched during the past 6 years from Tubby's teams. Everybody loses confidence and starts playing like DIII players. This is a very talented team and will do beat teams if they keep playing like a team. They just need to have a winning mentality. Until then, IZZO will have the edge.

Go Gophers

I agree on Painter and perhaps DeChellis. After that....

Izzo- Can't argue with results, runs a clean program, and I think is a genuinely good guy when he wins. Being a Wisconsin fan, however, I can't stand him. The napoleon complex, bizarre emotionality, and utter incredulous whining when he loses is very annoying. I've noticed this only occurs when losing to Wisconsin though. If he gets beaten by what he deems a "worthy" opponent like Illinois/OSU/Duke/etc., he is fairly gracious.

Bo Ryan- I'll spare you all of my homer positive thoughts and just say I am very satisfied with everything about the Badger program. I have faith that one or two Final Fours will happen by 2015.

3-6 Tubby, Weber, Matta, and Painter are pretty interchangable in these spots. I tend to value coaching over recruiting, which makes me pulls Painter up in my mind and Matta down somewhat. I love Tubby and Weber. I think they are both outstanding coaches who know the game and do things the right way. They both recruit pretty well too. For some reason though, both Illinois and Minnesota seem to be ridiculously inconsistent. Both programs lose too many games they shouldn't lose (MSU actually falls in this category as well, but more than makes up for it in the post-season).

7-8 Beilen and Carmody - Gimmick system coaches who will pull off upsets but will never contend for the Big Ten Crown. Might sneak in the tournament every few years.

9-10 McCaffrey and Crean. Crean and his teams run on pure energy and emotion, similar to a chicken with it's head cut off. Indiana will improve as Crean is a good recruiter and his guys will get older, but I'd be surprised if he ever wins a title trying to coach against any of the above guys on this list. McCaffrey and Iowa will be comical trying to play an up and down game in the Big Ten.

11. DeChellis- What can you say? I really feel for that NIT champion team from two years ago though. They should have been in the tourney and likely would have won a game or two.
