Raheem Layne Commits

He was recruited by Jay Sawvel and Dan Obrien. I don't care if he hasn't been rated, if Jay Sawvel thinks a kid can play DB, he can play. Raheem Layne is 6'1" corner.

Another "they'll coach him up" recruit.

This is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Gophers think they can't land the 4* level recruits, so they don't even try to land them, and wind up with an entire roster of lower 3* and 2* players. And then, they wonder why the other teams have better talent. If I was a smart-ass, I would call that "settling for mediocrity."

Small school kid in a football recruit rich state a similar profile to Jalen Myrick. If it helps he was getting interest from Nebraska.

Was on an official visit this week.

Defensive back is a position where I'm fine pulling in low 3 and 2 star kids as long as we have Sawvel. I've come to a point where I don't care where they are rated with DB's, if Sawvel recruits and develops them then there is always a chance they could be a stud and play in the NFL.

But at other positions I definitely agree that we need to recruit better talent.

I think you read too much into money making machines applying somewhat random "stars" to potential athletes you know nothing about.

The offer list says this isn't true. They've offered 4 and 5 star guys. http://minnesota.247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/Offers

As already stated, DB is the position I am not worried about at all when it comes to ratings and other offers. This coaching staff has continued to show they can really identify and develop corners and safeties.

Sawvel has put guys in the league so he has some cred. Any other position would be more of a concern.

It is interesting though with his reputation that we can't be in the mix for 4-5 guys like Quran Hafiz and land 1 or 2. Like we did with Durr last year.

Didn't we have a highly rated DB in on an official visit yesterday?

You're probably thinking of Bruce Judson. Former OSU commit but he's an offensive athlete.

One thing the staff has done well the last couple years is identify late risers who were under the radar but played really well in their senior seasons. I'm going to trust them on this one, he's got great size and from his hudl video it appears he's not afraid to smack someone. Welcome aboard!

I thought Ryan Burns mentioned one in his Gridiron Podcast this week, but maybe I was wrong about that.

Raheem Layne, Judson, Croslen, and Bryson Jackson (LB from Texas) are the 4 on OVs this weekend. DeWayne Terry is scheduled to be here in 2 weeks, but that may change with Layne committing.

Out of curiosity I had to look at Wisconsin recruits and ratings, a little higher ranked but not all that different from Minnesota at this point, could it be that identifying recruits that are going to improve more in college is more important than high school ratings.

Are you suggesting star rankings aren't all that matter? Good luck with that.

A couple thoughts....I agree with others that Sawvel has credibility, so if he thinks a kid can play then I trust him to get that kid where he needs to be. By your way of thinking we shouldn't have brought in Winfield Jr, last year and he has contributed more than any other freshman. By coaching up players you will eventually attract more talent. You have to put the cart before the horse. Curious, do you even know how many 5 star players there in the country? Hint...it's the same amount of first round picks in the NFL.

Looks athletic enough to me. If the defensive coaches think he can play in our scheme then we have to assume they know what they are doing.

So what about Eric Murray, Cedric Thompson, Jalen Myrick, Damarius Travis and others? They've been coached up with success.

On the other hand our - 3* and 4** - some of them were busts - Andre McDonald, Jamel Harbison, Berkeley Edwards, Jeff Jones...

Some are as advertised - Maxx Williams, De'Vondre Campbell, Jonah Pirsig, David Cobb...

Sure, recruiting has to improve. It is a Catch-22. You have to have reasons for these high level recruits to want to come here. That comes with winning consistently.

Our team is 7-2 with three challenging games left. I think given all the obstacles, that is pretty darn good moving in the right direction. Let's sit back and enjoy this season.

love this commitment. no doubt our staff will coach him up and he's a diamond in the rough. welcome!

I'd also point out that there is a big difference between kids that haven't been evaluated for what ever reason and those that have been evaluated. The recruiting services miss a lot of small town kids in Florida, Georgia, and Texas. These kids do get evaluated after they commit, but I don't think that they get the credit they deserve, because of the level of competition.

Did you watch Wyoming dismantle Utah State last night with their "settling" method of recruiting?
Often the difference between a 2 star and a 4 star recruit is the coaching they receive.
Get the kids you want on your team and coach them.

What I am suggesting is that you don't need 4 and 5 star recruits to succeed, Wisconsin is a good example, the majority of their recruits are 3 star recruits sprinkled with a few 4 stars, you will never dominate Ohio State, Alabama, Etc.. but I am not so sure that should be the end all goal, being at least competitive with the helmet schools should be the goal and who knows you may beat them once in a while.

You clearly accept mediocrity. You are part of the reason 8 wins in the teams ceiling.
