On preparing for Minnesota's rushing game:
"We worked a lot on fundamentals last week. You watch the Wisconsin or Nebraska football games and we've played against arguably the best in the country at running back. They're the same at Minnesota. They are very strong as a Coach (Jerry) Kill football program. I've coached against Coach Kill when he was at Northern Illinois for a year. He's got a good football program and some well-proven veterans that are playing from him and they're doing a great job. We're going to have to take care of what we take care of and that's swarming to the football, making sure that we tackle and get off blocks. That's very important this game."

On Coach Kill:

"Coach Kill is a great individual. I've enjoyed my time coaching against him in both conferences, the MAC and, of course, the Big Ten. I think he's done a very good job of being able to fit; being able to recruit to what Minnesota can recruit with and to, also, his offensive scheme. That comes a lot with the continuity (off his staff)."

On preparing for different offenses:

"Lately, we've faced so many running football teams like Wisconsin and Nebraska. Now, Nebraska is a little bit more spread, where they spread you out and run the football, but Nebraska is a `pound-it' type football program same as Minnesota. One thing that I thought we did pretty well against Wisconsin is we took them out of their two-back offense. They really beat us on the one-back offense with the two tight ends on the football field and what Minnesota does is very similar to what Wisconsin does. They'll be in a two-back set with a true fullback, a transfer from Butler Junior College, and then they'll also be in the two tight end stuff. Their tight ends are very athletic and I think they do a great job with utilizing the things they do well from blocking to getting them involved in their passing attack."

Game Notes:

QUICK HITS
• The Fighting Illini (3-4 overall, 0-3 B1G West) will look to end a three-game skid when Minnesota (6-1 overall, 3-0 B1G West) comes to Memorial Stadium as part of the University of Illinois' 104th Homecoming celebration on Saturday (11 a.m. CT, ESPNU).

• Illinois' offense has thrived on big plays, racking up 43 scrimmage plays of 20+ yards, 15th-most in FBS and nine more than it had in the entire 2012 season. The Illini are tied for 18th nationally in 30+-yard plays (20) and 21st in 40+-yard plays (11).
• The Illini passing game is averaging 304.6 yards per game, tops in the Big Ten and 20th in FBS.
• Freshman WR Mike Dudek had eight catches for 200 yards against Purdue on Oct. 4, marking just the fourth 200-yard receiving game in school history. It was the most receiving yards by a Big Ten player this season and the 17th-most in FBS.
• Dudek ranks second in FBS in fourth-quarter receiving yards with 264 yards on 16 catches (16.5 ypc).
• Dudek has 598 receiving yards on 37 catches this season, meaning he needs only 79 more yards to break Arrelious Benn's school record for freshman receiving yards (676), which was set in 2007.
• Junior RB Josh Ferguson is one of only four FBS running backs with over 450 rushing yards and 250 receiving yards on the season. See page three for details.
• Ferguson is one of only two active FBS running backs with more than 1,500 career rushing yards (1,613) and 1,000 receiving yards (1,063). Arizona State's D.J. Foster (1,606 rush yds / 1,558 rec. yards) is the other.
• With his 45-yard pick-six against Texas State, junior CB V'Angelo Bentley became only the second player in Illinois history to record a kick return, punt return and interception return for touchdown in his career, joining the legendary Harold "Red" Grange. See page three for details.
• Bentley ranks second in the nation in combined kick return yards with 660 on 32 returns (24 KR for 554, eight PR for 106). His punt return average (13.2 ypr) would rank 12th nationally, but he's just shy of the minimum 1.2 returns per game.
• Three Illini rank in the top six in the Big Ten in tackles. Senior safety Zane Petty ranks fourth (9.3 tpg), junior LB Mason Monheim is fifth (9.1) and sophomore DB Taylor Barton sixth (9.0).

Game Notes:
• Dudek ranks second in FBS in fourth-quarter receiving yards with 264 yards on 16 catches (16.5 ypc).

Wow. That's what you get when you are playing from BEHIND. A LOT.

• Bentley ranks second in the nation in combined kick return yards with 660 on 32 returns (24 KR for 554, eight PR for 106).

And THAT's what you get when the other team is kicking off... A LOT!! A la, Troy Stoudermire for the Gophers a few years ago.

The way the ESPN blog portrayed this press conference made it sound like Beckman and Cubit aren't on the same page, and the latter simply sounds like he's given up.

Hopefully Cubit has spent most of the bye getting his résumé up to snuff for his sake and ours.

Beckman burning the redshirt on Bailey in a decided game is baffling. He could have saved it for this game, but instead he gave Claeys some film to work with.
