DEFENSE -- Both squads can defend the pass. The Gophers are 15th in the nation (182.4 yards allowed). Three starting secondary members will be playing their last game in maroon and gold: S Antonio Johnson, team leader with 99 tackles, and CBs Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Eric Murray. DTs Scott Ekpe and Steven Richardson, and CB Jalen Myrick return from injuries. ...

The Chippewas' pass defense allows 190.5 yards per game and tightens up in the red zone, where it has given up scores on only 74 percent of opponents' drives, 13th best in the country. Senior DB Kavon Frazier leads team with 103 tackles. EDGE: Gophers

SPECIAL TEAMS -- Central Michigan coach John Bonamego, a former NFL special teams coordinator, had high praise for Gophers P Peter Mortell, who led the Big Ten in total punts (70), punts downed inside the 20 (26) and punts over 50 yards (20). ... The Chippewas rank second in the nation with three blocked punts. K Brian Eavey is only 16 of 24 on field goals. EDGE: Gophers

GAME PREDICTION -- The Gophers will snap a seven-game losing streak in bowls dating back to 2004. A victory will be sweeter after a tumultuous season that included coaching changes and weathering blowback for making it to a bowl game with a losing record. Gophers, 24-13
