My first question was whether or not this Gopher teams depth was for real. It's one thing to be effective against Eastern Washington or Bowling Green and entirely another to be able to play with Louisville. The Gophers depth is for real as guys like Busch and Hoffarber and, to a lesser extent, Joseph and Williams provided some nice plays off the bench.

My second question was whether the Gophers were as athletic as I thought they were, or if there athleticism was just magnified by the competition they faced. Once again, the Gophers proved that they are an athletic team. There were many times where Louisville was rotating the ball around quickly with sharp passes, and the Gophers were able to move their feet and close the distance instead of giving up an open shot. Al Nolen was the quickest player on the floor and Damian held his own with some tough defensive matchups.

My third question was whether or not our Bigs could play well in the paint against top competition. This is a question that is still left unanswered in my mind. Colton and Ralph both had their moments, and neither looked slow or out of place out there which is a huge positive. I thought both played well defensively, but neither rebounded or scored very well. Against physical teams in the Big Ten, we will need one of the two (and hopefully both) to be a force on the boards and a factor in the post.

Overall, I came away very encouraged about the prospects for the Big Ten season. The Gophers never lost the lead after being tied at 11 despite Westbrook's foul trouble and still not having Paul Carter who I think would have matched up well in this game. I know the announcers were really playing up the Louisville "tired/travel" angle, but the Gophers could just as easily have played u p the "rusty/finals" angle. It's not easy to go ten days without playing and then go up against the best team on your non-conference schedule.

Some other observations:

Damian Johnson has really taken the next step in his game. I thought Damian should try to add weight to play the 4 this year, but instead he's vastly improved his ball handling and passing skills and is a nice small forward. Damian must have put a ton of time in the gym this summer because he's a much better player with the ball in his hands than he was last season. It's extremely rare for someone to improve in those areas so much, especially when they are already in college.

Travis Busch is a great steadying influence on the court. Against the Louisville pressure, Busch's crisp, accurate passes really stood out to me. The kid is just a great fundamental player, he boxes out, he cuts hard to the basket, and he positions himself well on defense.

Blake Hoffarber did an admirable job against the press. Blake is another guy who's progress with his ball handling this summer is very noticeable. I can almost guarantee that Blake turns it over multiple times last year if forced to bring the ball up the court against that kind of pressure against some very good athletes form Louisville. It might not have always looked the prettiest, but Blake got the job done.

It was nice to hear the announcers mention that the Gophers have produced the 2nd most NBA players in the Big Ten. It was also nice to hear that the NBA scouts in attendance were looking at Al Nolen and Colton Iverson. Those are great things for potential recruits to hear.

I agree with your answers.
I'll add two points.

1. If you think this team is deep, wait till next year.
2. The announcers sucked. Like so many other national announcers they spent most of the time telling cute little stories.
Very seldom would they say who the foul was on and/or how many fouls that player or team had. Many times would not tell what the infraction was. Very seldom would they say who was comming in or leaving game.

Let the game be the story. That's all.

I agree. Marques Johnson (former UCLA forward, Milwaukee Buck and C-level movie guy) spent more time dropping little "Hollywood insider" comparisons than talking about the game. It was annoying to hear him drone on and on when all the viewing audience wanted to know was 'what was the call?' and 'who made the foul?'

Another case of turning them off at half and turning on WCCO (which is tricky because they are always 5 seconds ahead of the action).

Radio Delay

Drex - I don't know enough about it, but they sell a little gizmo at Radio Shack (and the like) that you can set to remove the delay if you are listening to radio and watching tv. I think it just plugs into your radio (not sure how) and you can set up to a ten second delay so it synchs up with your tv. I just heard an ad for it on the radio the other day. Don't know how often you try to listen to radio with TV, but it might be worth it.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? (or am I drunk again?)

Redshirting Carter?

Still catching up on the board, but has anyone heard this mentioned anywhere? I heard it was a possibility if his ankle doesn't come around pretty soon. It would make sense, Gophers certainly are showing enough depth to deal with it, if it comes to that.

I think (not sure) he already took 1 redshirt year in JuCo.

Thanks for the Tip Mom8Pop

I'll see if I can locate that gadget on-line and price it out. If it's under $30 bucks, might be worth it.

EG9,

Here's a 4th question: Just how good can Payton become? Is the Coach saving him as a secret weapon for the Big Ten season?

I think (not sure) he already took 1 redshirt year in JuCo.

I think you're right, but that wouldn't stop him from applying for a second, injury-based, year. But I don't know how many games he played in (too lazy to look it up). It has to be a pretty limited number to get the injury redshirt.

Less than 30% of the team's games = medical redshirt possibility.

FOT mocked those who even brought up the possibility of a season ending ankle injury.

I thought the other thing about Hoffarber's game, besides his great ball handling, was his on-the-ball defense. He really got after it and kept everything in front of him.

1- I think this team is definitely for real. We have good, not great talent but our best players are all very solid fundamentally and the entire team plays hard. Also our top perimeter guys (Nolan, Johnson and Westbrook) are all very good defensive players. If you play D and play hard you'll be in games. I just realized you were asking about depth and I'd say yea but to an extent. We have a ton of wing players that can all give good minutes and I haven't even seen Carter yet. However Nolan is our only true PG and we need Williams to be healthy and to give us some good minutes down low. However we have 11-12 guys that can give us minutes. Personally I think JAS has done very little to justify keeping him on the floor though. Also I think Williams, Bostick and Carter will all be taking up more and more minutes

2- I think we're decent athletically when we're at full strength. Nolan, Johnson, Carter (although I haven't seen him play), and Iverson are all good to great athletes. Westbrook is ok too. Hoffarber isn't all that athletic but it doesn't really hurt him as he's still a good defensive player and plays within himself. Busch isn't a great athlete either but he's not a liability out there at all.

3- Unanswered. I think Williams coming back should help but we don't know how good the young guys will be against experienced B10 post men. Still I like they're potential

4-

The way I see it...according to those in the know, as of today we are the 23rd best team in the Nation. That says lots for a bunch of so-called no-names going into the season. Kudos to Tubby's TEAM and the way they root for each other for whomever is on the floor. No big-name stars, just a bunch of over-achievers that will provide Gopher FANS with lots of excitement. Keep it up Tubby's TEAM!!!! GO GOPHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
