How does RPI and poll rankings influence the selection/seeding of tourney teams.
Example: Indiana beats both #1 Kentucky and #2 Ohio State. At the end of the year (when their body of work is being analyzed by committee members) are those "rankings when they beat them" used or the "rankings those they defeated have at the end of the year?"
Last year we were ranked after the holiday tourney championship and then the wheels came off. Did Virginia get the benefit of knocking us off as a ranked team or did our horrible finish make their win over us less impressive?
So the question is: what counts? Where an opponent is ranked when you beat them or where they are ranked at the end of the year?

Can't speak for the Selection Committee, but in the end I look at what the team was at the end of the year, not what they were when a team played 'em. Case in point IU. If the Hoosiers go on to lose the rest of their games, that win doesn't look so impressive for the Gophers.

Another example would be Long Beach State's win at Pitt. Looked impressive at the time. I thought it would look awfully good for Dan Monson's squad come selection time (if they need an at-large bid), but now it looks like it won't help LBSU much, if at all. Pitt is winless in the Big East with an RPI just under 100.

Bottom line is you want all your opponents (especially the ones you beat) to have good seasons. That's where the Gophers are getting hurt right now. Some of their nonconference opponents (wins) have really taken a dip, i.e. Virginia Tech and Indiana State. That makes it more imperative that the Gophers get some quality scalps within the Big Ten. They have 1 so far (Indiana).

Now i have another question. After PSU dismantled Purdue at PSU, Purdue dismantled the Gophers at the Barn, and then the Gophers dismantled PSU at PSU, who the hell can figure out who is the best of these three teams as of today? I can't, and I will not try. As LadyGopher said..."On any given ...Day".
