I too am one of those individuals who think back on their collegiate days and remember Station 19 as a bar / restaurant. It had premier location for the pre and post game basketball and hockey crowds. I liked the high ceilings on the main floor (back when smoking was allowed at least you could breathe). The basement was much more intimate with the stone / concrete exposed walls, low ceiling and dim lighting. The lower level was the type of place a guy could drink in solitude and not have to look outside and reminded what time of day it was as nary any sunlight could come in.

Thankfully much did not change when the name changed to Sparky's. I think that was the name. Definitely WTF in my book for the name change. Time passes and an architectural firm purchases the building now known as Station 19 Architects http://www.station19.com/

So in driving by a couple of weeks ago there is a sign outside the building hanging from the fence with a phone # which I implied meant that space was available to lease in the building for commerical use.

So my question is this - What price would it take to purchase the building outright from Station 19Architects? I think it is a waste of such a valuable site now that TCF Bank Stadium has come to fruition. It will be even more valuable when the light rail construction is finished and there will be a stop just steps from the site.

My first choice would be for the University to take it over. Fully aware of the fact that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings It would make a great building to house an athletic Hall of Fame of some sort which could hold a mulititude of gatherings on game days. A close second choice would be for a private party to purchase the building and turn it back into a bar / restaurant with an old school Gopher athletic theme to it. Kinda like the original Station 19 / Stub & Herb's prior to its new owners (but cleaner). Make use of the deck on the east side of the building which could overlook the stadium plaza and or use what is now a grassy area abutting the rerouted University Avenue so it could hold a beer tent on football Saturdays. A bar there would be a license to print money on gamedays with a location that cannot be equalled anywhere in the Big 10.

This wouldn't be such a big deal of someone this board could just win the Powerball tonight and make those dreams come true. Go ahead and steal my idea if you like just give me a preferred booth in the bar with a lot of big screen TV's on gameday.

The owners of Station 19 must really not want to sell. Even in this economy you would think there would be people that would realize the potential that you just mentioned above. Between the football, basketball, and hockey games...not to mention all the other events that happen at the U, a bar there couldn't help but be successful if it was run well.

Like you, though, my first choice would be an M Club Hall of Fame building. There could be a party room upstairs the M club could use on game days or rent out to other groups. Maybe that idea of having a little "monument park" of statues of Gopher greats behind the building could happen someday. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a historic building and small grounds dedicated to all the Gopher greats (all sports) on a football shaped property right between our football and basketball stadiums?!??

Come on....someone with big money....make this a reality!

Station 19 would be an amazing place for a bar/resturant. It's ground zero for gopher sports. I wish I had the resources to make it happen right now. I'm going to guess someone will make it a bar within 10 years, hopefully sooner. The opportunity costs are too high not to.

I think the sign is there because HOK was renting part of the building as a field office during construction of TCF Bank Stadium, and now the spot is vacant again. Some business owner could put in a regional office in the space, and then have really close parking on gamedays.

GO GOPHERS!

From perusing the Station 19 Architects website it looks like they are primarily involved in the remodeling / design of churches. In this economy I can't see that being a big money maker but perhaps the firm answers to a Higher Calling.

Hey, I am going to officially lay claim to the monument park idea. If it happens, can you guys chip together to get me something? Or, maybe the first statue can be of me (depicting me waiting in line to attend a Gopher game). It would be quite moving.

Maybe Dunder Mifflin could open up a Minneapolis branch. Dwight could be the regional manager and have his cousin Mose man the parking lot on gamedays to collect $50 per spot. Shots of beet juice in lieu of jello shots.

Apologies for vague The Office references in response to FarmGopher's suggestions.

Move Goldy's Locker to Station 19 from its TCF location. Make a sit down restaurant in Goldy's vacated spot at TCF.

Bar

If any spot was meant for a sports bar, that would be it.
If I won the lottery, you can bet I would open the "old time" Gopher bar. My second order of business is to find out who purchased Bruce Smith's Heisman trophy. I would pay whatever price it took and make it the centerpiece of the new Station 19 Sports Bar.

What is $340k to someone who just won the powerball.

Based on the rising real estate tax and the fact they created a football shaped lot for Station 19...and the fact it is located directly between TCF, Williams, and Mariucci, the city has other plans for that building also. That is just too good a spot for a sports related business for it to be used by an architect firm.
Look for a Darcy Pohland story about how this poor business man is being forced off his lot by the new football stadium.

Glad you did. I knew the idea was not mine, I just didn't take the time to go back and find who's idea it was! It is a good one and I hope your vision becomes reality someday!

I think the U tried real hard to buy the place when they were making plans for the new stadium, but the owners refused to sell.

A lot of good ideas posted-especially the Gopher Hall of Fame idea. If it were to become a HOF the first bronze statue should be of me. (for obvious reasons)

Agree, if I won the lottery I'd buy it and open a bar/restaurant, and wouldn't care if I made money.

Assuming none of us win the lottery, here's an idea: a former Gopher great buys the property and opens a place. The best candidate may be Kevin McHale. He certainly needs to do something to reclaim his image here in Minnesota. Sadly, his legacy at the T-Wolves is hanging out there. Just think of this conversation before and after basketball, hockey and football games: "let's meet over at McHale's before the game."

Awesome ideas! Let's hope the tax pressure alone makes one of these a reality in the next 5 years or so. I guess high taxes could limit the bar potential but increase the possibility of the U owned Hall of Fame or Legends building and plaza.
