on wikipedia it says that the michigan wolverines are the only school in ncaa history to win national championships in football, men's basketball, baseball and ice hockey.

yet at the golden gopher athletics page it says that we won 6 national championships in football, 2 in basketball (1902,1919), 7 in hockey, and three in baseball (1956, 1960, 1964).

what gives?

Here's what you need to know......

Many publications of recent years have what I would call a limited
view of national championships. Meaning, they can only recognize
what exists today or in recent years. Its difficult for some to recognize
what came before.

If one thinks there are many polls, ratings systems, etc that exist today,
one only had to go back to before the 1940's. There were many more than.
And, they all crowned national champions.

The AP and UPI dominated this the past half century, but that doesn't
mean we cannot recognize the Helms Foundation, Dunkel, and many
other services that did the same for just as long a period of time. How
many know about the old MacArthur Trophy?

Given that, Ivy League football teams dominate national championships
in football, with Yale leading the way.

That's why there is disparity among different posters, news media, etc.

And what to know about Wikipedia...

Wikipedia is not always accurate. The information is added by anyone who registers. Yes, it can go through an editing process and corrections are made, but these are not timely.

BTC1899, it would be cool if you registered with Wikipedia and added Minnesota as the other school that has the same accomplishment, and list the date and source to back it up so the editors leave it there.

Well, there are 2 problems here.

First off, the Michigan posting is somewhat correct as the 2 basketball championships were not "NCAA" championships as that organization didn't exist. We have won 5 NCAA hockey championships and 3 in baseball.

That said, there is no such thing as an NCAA football championship in Division 1 sports.

This is a cool link for looking at NCAA championships by school - http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html

I don't know about the basketball, because that was a long time ago - check the NCAA basketball web site for that. The NCAA officially recognizes the Minnesota football, baseball and hockey champions. In football, the annual NCAA records book (a huge tome) has endorsed football national champions despite the lack of a playoff system. Since 1936, the AP poll ,and since 1950 the AP and coaches' polls have determined winners. In recent years the records book has added pre-1936 football winners, so the Gophers are champs for 1934 and '35, too.

good stuff. i have made some additions to some entries on wikipedia before. maybe i will look into the NCAA records and head over to the discussion section on the wolverine sports page and see what they think.
