per the Quad City Times:
THE SPRING THING: The depth Minnesota has at running back was apparent throughout the spring. Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith combined to rush for 1,379 yards last season, but redshirt freshmen Jonathan Femi-Cole and James Johannesson proved their capabilities as well.
New offensive coordinator Jay Johnson implemented new zone blocking schemes this spring as the Golden Gophers worked to fill a couple of holes on the offensive line. Junior college transfers Garrison Wright at left tackle and Vincent Calhoun at right guard have made an immediate impact.
After recording just 22 sacks a year ago, Minnesota’s defensive focus in the spring included the development of a more effective pass rush. Hank Epke and Gaelin Elmore are stepping into increased roles and junior college transfer Merrick Jackson is expected to make an early impact at a tackle spot.
Mitch Leidner returns at quarterback, but his back-ups got a chance to get valuable reps this spring as he worked his way back from foot surgery. Demry Croft benefitted the most while working with a group of young receivers.
