Q & A with Trevor Mbakwe

I just hope he's here and not in Miami. If you know what I mean...

Just a thought. My hunch is a school-run web site wouldn't run this piece about Mbakwe unless they knew he was going to be a member of the team this season. I would think if there's any chance whatsoever he's in serious, deep legal doo-doo regarding his criminal charges, they would have held this feature for another (better) time. Why would they run it & take the chance that a few days/weeks later he's busted & dropped from the team? That wouldn't be very smart PR.

I read it the same way. I hope this is a good sign for Trevor.

SS,

I'm guessing that the rush for fresh content for the website was more behind the decision than anything else. Honestly, if the AD didn't know that Trevor had been charged, I'm guessing the guys running the website don't know that all is well.

Did anyone else find humor/irony in the fact that his favorite TV show is Law & Order?

While I dearly hope you are correct, past actions of the athletic marketing/website have not convinced me that they have the same analytical perceptiveness that you do.

the date of the interview appears to be in the last couple days....

which would be more of a positive sign. some of you are reading way too much into what it means/doesn't mean

SS - I was thinking the same thing. Why would they be putting this out there if they really didn't think he would be there.

I am still skeptical that it was him mostly because it appears that similar "bicycle bandit" assaults have been occurring semi-regularly in the same area after he left (and still going on I think).

Is there any actual evidence of this bicycle bandit? I highly doubt that the DA would move forward with a trial if there was indeed another really tall black guy riding around on a bicycle assaulting people.

I've been wondering the same thing. Seeing as they are going forward with this, it's hard to imagine that someone with the same profile is going around doing the same kind of thing. You would think if that were true, we would've heard something in the newspaper (although our sports writers blow, so maybe not), or the news would just seem bigger in general. The incidents still going on with Trevor in MN would be pretty damn good evidence that he was falsely identified.

I'm still optimistic that this will blow over and we'll see Trevor in uniform. If anything, that Q & A made me more hopeful, but yeah, it is possible we're reading into that too much.

You assume that the prosecutor is interested in who actually did it. In reality they are interested in convicting people for crimes (there is a difference).

Assaults are relatively minor, so if the prosecutor gets a witness identification he probably thinks it is conviction-worthy. I highly doubt he/she has spent even an hour trying to verify whether it was actually Trevor after the witness identification.

Sure, they would like to get the right person, but in the case of young urban minorities, they usually take the "guilty until proven innocent" approach. It is not surprising at all that they are going after him despite someone continuing the same sort of crimes. To the authorities, it is irrelevant if they can get a conviction for one of the assaults.

If you don't believe me, spend some time at a North Minneapolis community center.

exactly. sad, but true.

The existence of this bike bandit would make a conviction a little hard to come by, dontcha' think?

That would depend on the quality of his representation and whether he asks a judge to decide or a jury. I don't think we're even sure at this point whether there is a pending court date or not. Sometimes it is safer to plead out community service than take your chances at trial.
