One way to measure (compare) talent is by HS recruiting rankings. The Boilers have 3 Top 100 (RSCI consensus) rated recruits - JuJuan Johnson #47 in 2007, E'Twaun Moore #23 in 2007, and Terone Johnson #84 in 2010.

None of the other Boilers - DJ Byrd, Patrick Bade, Sandi Marcius, Travis Carroll, Ryne Smith, Lewis Jackson, John Hart, or Kelsey Barlow - was rated Top 100 by RSCI. Of course, Robbie Hummel was rated (#62 in 2007) by RSCI but he is not playing this season. Frosh RS Anthony johnson was NR in RSCI Top 100 either.

And yet, the Boilers are the 2nd best team in B10 (and not far from 1st best). Their L to Gophers has kept them a game behind Ohio St.

They have two seniors who stayed in the program who are both probably first team Big Ten. If they had Hummel, they would have been my choice to win the National Championship. Two years ago as sophomores, they played a great game against a highly favored UConn team in the sweet 16 or Elite 8. I always thought that Hummel was the best of all those guys. It's too bad he has had such an injury riddled college career.

FoT, this actually hurts your cause regarding Tubby and his coaching ability; it definitely doesn't help it.

It just shows that a good coach can land non-Top 100 players, coach them up, and make them into a Big 10 title contender. Something Tubby hasn't done since he got here. In fact, I don't believe we've finished higher than 6th since Tubby came aboard.

Tubby has landed a similar # of Top 100 recruits in his time @ MN as Painter over the past 4-5 years, but doesn't have anything to show for it (Sampson #58, Joseph #61, White #19, Williams #100).

Tubby has landed similar Top 100 recruits in his time here as Painter in the past few years, but doesn't have anything to show for it (Sampson, Joseph, White, Williams).

Matt Painter is a SUPERB coach, perhaps THE best young coach in B10.

Hummel is injured and A Johnson redshirting but Boilers have 11 healthy players. 2 great ones, 9 who are fair to good.

And BTW the Gophers and Boilers SPLIT this year. Oh, you forgot?

Not only did they split, but many on here were complaining about Tubby when we lost at Purdue.

Those are Rivals, not RSCI rankings. Each of those 4 was also rated Top 100 by RSCI but 2 are gone from the team.

Matt Painter? The BEST young coach in the B10?

Wow, what a brilliant observation......considering he's the ONLY young coach in the conference.

Defining BYC as 10 years or fewer experience. Only Izzo is better than Painter, maybe Matta.

Matta's a better recruiter. Or maybe he just has more cash-wielding boosters behind him. Not a chance he's a better coach.

I was gonna say. I'm pretty sure Matta is a mediocre coach at best.

Question - why all the hate for Matta? Guy just wins and gets great players, and has never been accused of cheating (that I am aware of) yet people here always bash him and imply he cheats...wouldn't you kill to have him in MN?

They also have a very good junior point guard in Jackson, he's not NBA caliber but he complements Johnson and Moore perfectly.

Because Matta had nothing but cash wielding boosters behind him at Butler and Xavier too.

I don't think, and certainly don't know, that he cheats. I do feel like his teams can really under perform (ala Barnes) at times and I put that on him.

E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson are technically only two players, but this season they count as much as four or five top-100 players. You're talking about two guys who are going to be All-Americans this season (take your pick - one of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd team for each) and 1st team All-Big Ten. Johnson is going to be an NBA draft pick this year - is it a surprise that the two teams most likely to have players who will get drafted by the NBA this year are the two teams at the top of the standings? Lewis Jackson has emerged as a very good player this year - he was barely outside of the top-100 in the rankings. Johnson and Moore are the only players on the team who are averaging more than 8 ppg this season. Let's see how Painter does next year when he doesn't have two All-Americans to build his role players around before anointing him the next Bo Ryan. Painter has done a great job this year for sure, but don't try to argue that he doesn't have much talent on his team this year.

Painter will have a similar level of talent but NOWHERE NEAR the star of this year's team.

I see 25 W again next season (end of year, not regular season total).
