Purdue hiring Barry Odom from UNLV

Bio Seems like a quick hook at Missouri? Solid background. Knows what he doesn't know after two head coaching stops....ha with the exception of Purdue administration and NIL money.
How many guys can he bring with him?
Looks like most of the UNLV studs were seniors...but seniors sometimes have another year?

I was hoping he’d stay at UNLV for awhile, he did a great job there. Missouri not so much, hopefully the same at Purdue.

Odom’s a solid coach and I thought he was a great fit for UNLV and the Mountain West conference. If Purdue has a lot of NIL money, he might do better than his time at Missouri.

Seriously: What makes a coach "solid"? Not crazy? Crazy? Not a job jumper? A job jumper? Good defense? Good offense? Worked with some guy that was solid? Or is it like the music term "the band was 'tight'".

I read this term on this board over and over again and then it seems about 75% of the time it doesn't work out because they weren't as solid as we thought.

Being a native Minnesotan, to me solid means “not too bad” and “not too good.” Hopefully, that clears it up for you. 😁

You missed the "Talking Minnesotan" class if that's your take on it. Or you have been in Washington too long. Every true MN speaker knows that "not too good" is WAY different than "not too bad." I might answer "not too good" if someone asks me how I am on the day after I am diagnosed with a terminal disease, my dog was hit by a car, I lost my job, and the bank foreclosed on my house. On the other hand, I might answer that same question with "not too bad" on the day after I won the lottery, the Gophers won the national championship, and I caught the state record walleye.

Well, fer one t'ing, dat 'eye ain't good eatin'. Too big. Two pounders is watcha want.

It's their Jerry Kill.

Programs that are decent often take swings to "take them to the next level" and programs going through hell often hire steady option.

Odom's a good coach.
Would you say he's "solid" though?

I think people probably mean "safe" when they say solid. Probably won't be bad but probably won't do better than Brohm.

Let's start with your definition of it...

Would you say he's "solid" though?
Sure, you could say that.

He has a track record of being able to create a program that plays decent football at places it isn't necessarily easy to win.

Yeah. They got burned with a relative unknown as head coach. We know what that's like.
Yeah if he turns out to be good...and if we hire a good basketball coach who plans to maximize our potential...they and us might get to mediocrity.

LOL agreed. There's no such thing as a coach who can win at Purdue or Minnesota. But we sure love to throw up those clichés.

Just when UNLV's program comes to life the coach leaves. OTOH no one can blame him for making that move. Best of luck Barry.

I probably wasn’t clear. It wasn’t too good of me to use quotes and the word and to signify an average of not too good and not too bad. But after thinking about, I didn’t do too bad.
